Cover Crops. What's the big deal?
In early spring (top photo) cover crops help hold the soil in place. The roots of the plants dig deep, naturally preventing compaction, allowing water to more easily soak into the ground instead of creating washes.
Just look at all the plant matter in the soybean crop planted into a no till, terminated cover crop (bottom picture). All that plant material will break down, returning nutrients to the soil and provide a residue layer that has the potential to suppress weeds. This means less competition for your cash crop for water and nutrients . in addition the no till, terminated cover crops helped reduce the loss of top soil (you know all that dirt you have seen blowing around the past couple of weeks).
If you are interested in learning more about how cover crops can benefit your operation, all the office at 712-297-7824 option 3.
