Talk about a long time coming !
George Washington appointed Israel Putnam commander of the US troops in New York March 29th 1776. Old Put as he was called served notably as an officer with during the French and Indian War. Mohawk warriors captured him, but he was saved from the ritual burning given to enemies by intervention of a French officer,
with whom the Mohawk were allied. ( see pic)

During the American Revolutionary War his reckless courage and fighting spirit became known far beyond Connecticut's borders through the circulation of folk legends in the American colonies and states celebrating his exploits.

Speaking of the Louisiana Territory prior to the US acquisition the territory was controlled by the Spanish and the French. The Spanish made alliance with the Native Americans in the territories. This is an Indian Peace Medal that was used by the Spanish with the Natives.

Today in 1774 the British Parliament passed the Boston Port Act. The act closed the port of Boston and demanded funds to pay for the tea that had been dumped into Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773.

Union General William T. Sherman defeated Confederate General Joseph Johnston at the Battle of Bentonville, North Carolina March 19th 1865. Resulting in Johnston surrendered to Sherman little more than a month later. Coupled with Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender earlier in April, Johnston's surrender represented the effective end of the war.
