“Can you read lips?” 👄

At the National Sexual Assault Conference, Sara from DAWN and Aracelia from DeafHope trained hearing victim service providers on communication access for Deaf survivors.

Through this lip reading activity, providers experienced how easy it can be to miss words, fill in the blanks, and misunderstand what someone is saying.

Now imagine having to do that during a crisis.

Deaf, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled, Late Deafened, and Hard of Hearing survivors have different communication needs and preferences. Never assume a survivor can or wants to lip read.

Ask survivors how they prefer to communicate. Don’t decide for them.

Communication access is not optional. It is part of survivor centered care. 💜

Human trafficking is about more than what we often see in movies. It can involve grooming, manipulation, exploitation, and control.

Thank you to this survivor for courageously sharing your story and helping others better understand the realities of human trafficking. Your voice raises awareness, challenges misconceptions, and reminds us why survivor-centered support matters.
