"Hoosier Works" and EBT giveaways claiming to offer free government phones or upgrade promotions are almost always phishing or identity theft scams. Government agencies (like the FSSA) do not give away smartphones randomly via websites or text messages.
Here is how these scams operate and what you can do to protect yourself and your benefits:
⚠️ Common Scam Tactics. The Bait: You receive a text, social media ad, or email claiming you qualify for a "free government phone" or a premium smartphone upgrade.
The Trap: The site asks you to click a link to "verify your identity" or enter your Hoosier Works EBT card number, PIN, or Social Security number.
The Con: Scammers use the information you provide to drain your EBT funds or steal your identity.
🔒 How to Protect Yourself.
Never Share Your PIN or Password: State agencies and legitimate service providers will never text or call you out of the blue to ask for your EBT card number or PIN.
Verify Through Official Channels: If you are interested in free government cell phone programs, apply only through legitimate, official providers like https://www.assurancewireless.com/lifeline-services/states/indiana-lifeline-free-government-phone-service .

Protect Your Hoosier Works Card: To manage or check on the status of your legitimate SNAP/EBT funds, exclusively use the official FSSA: DFR: EBT (https://www.in.gov/fssa/dfr/ebt-hoosier-works-card/) portal.

On May 11, 2026, the Rockville Police Department received a complaint alleging that Jason Eberhart, 54, of Rockville, disseminated matter harmful to minors on the social media platform Nextdoor. With assistance from the Parke County Sheriff’s Office and the Parke County Prosecutor’s Office, law enforcement officers took Eberhart into custody. Eberhart was booked into the Parke County Jail on two counts of Dissemination of Matter Harmful to Minors, a Level 6 Felony. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This investigation was conducted by the Rockville Police Department, an affiliated member of the Indiana Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. The Indiana ICAC Task Force is a multi-agency task force led by the Indiana State Police that investigates and prosecutes individuals who use the internet to sexually exploit or entice children. Each year, Indiana ICAC investigators evaluate thousands of tips, investigate hundreds of cases, and rescue dozens of children from ongoing sexual abuse.
The Indiana ICAC Task Force encourages Hoosiers to report online exploitation, solicitation, and enticement-related crimes against children to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. The NCMEC website can be accessed through the Indiana ICAC Task Force website. To report a crime involving a child victim through the internet or other electronic means, please contact your local Indiana law enforcement agency.
