Nurse practitioners (NP) fill a certain void in the medical community that is created by the shortage of family physicians. Given their entitlements, NPs are a good substitute as they can perform many of the functions that are normally reserved for doctors.

One of the roles of a nursing practitioner is to educate their patients and their families. Psychiatric NPs, for instance, can assess their patients and provide treatment (psychotherapy) but they will also see to it that the families involved understand clearly what’s going on.

According to Wikipedia: “A nurse practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice registered nurse and a type of mid-level practitioner. NPs are trained to assess patient needs, order and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnose disease, formulate and prescribe treatment plans.”

While nurse practitioners (NP) aren’t physicians, they do have many of the privileges and duties typically associated with doctors. In some states, for instance, NPs can open their own practice and see patients independently.

It takes quite a while to become a nurse practitioner but, this doesn’t mean that the learning stops after you become one. In fact, NPs are required to pursue continuing education so they can stay abreast of current trends and practices.

Did you know that nurse practitioners (NP) can perform a number of things that registered nurses (RN) can’t? NPs, for instance, can order diagnostic tests and prescribe medication which is something that’s normally done by physicians.

01/12/2021

A nurse practitioner (NP) is certainly higher up the ladder than a regular RN but, it does take a lot of effort to become one. An NP, for instance, will need to have at least a master’s degree to earn their position so it does take a lot of time and effort to qualify.

If you’re planning on pursuing advanced nursing and want to spend your career helping newborns, you could choose to become a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP). As an NNP, your responsibilities will involve providing medical care for pre- and full-term infants who are at risk of complications.

Did you know that Americans make more than a billion visits to nurse practitioners every year? This figure—which comes from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners—just goes to show the vital role that NPs play in the country’s health care system.

While a master’s degree in nursing (MSN) prepares an individual for clinical work, a doctorate in nursing (DNP) is appropriate if a leadership role is desired. DNP degree holders are typically chosen to lead the nursing team so it would be something to consider if you want to play a more strategic role.

12/29/2020

After becoming a nurse practitioner, you’ll need to continue learning to fulfill the requirements of your appointment. Depending on where you practice, you may be required to complete anywhere from 75 to 150 hours of continuing education along with 1,000 hours of clinic duty to be eligible for re-certification.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the demand for nurse practitioners will continue to climb. This is because the country’s population is aging and there are fewer primary care physicians around so more NPs will be needed to fill the gaps.
