The County Executive signed an executive order today to implement a 6 month moratorium on data centers. Right now there are NO restrictions on data center which is why I’ve been working like crazy to develop legislation that will detail the necessary requirements. Along with CP Fani Gonzalez, CM Sayles, and CM Friedson we introduced draft legislation as well as a growing list of amendments that we will submit in July. The moratorium will give us a little breathing room to make sure we get it right.

We are celebrating the 250th birthday of the country AND our county. Thrilled that the first celebration was in the Ag Reserve. It was quite fitting to celebrate the birth of our county surrounding by farm land, in a tight knit rural community, on a beautiful spring. Thanks to the Historic Medley District for creating this wonderful tribute.

It was great to get back to community events. Tonight we celebrated the little graduates of the Let’s Read tutoring program. This is a fantastic program that matches one to one tutors with 3rd graders. Sooooo important. “Until the 3rd grade children learn to read, after that they read to learn”.

I attended the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the history of the Edward U. Taylor Elementary School.

The Taylor School was built in 1952 as an elementary school for Black students at a time when Montgomery County used legally sanctioned racial segregation to prohibit Black children from attending white schools.

The Taylor School was one of the last county schools to desegregate, in 1961, and was the only segregated Black elementary school to retain its original function.
