ROCKVILLE CENTRE POLICE DEPARTMENT SUMMER SAFETY INITIATIVES

There have been several recent incidents of pedestrians believing they were being followed by person(s) in a vehicle or on foot. Each time, the description of the vehicle and subject(s) reported to the police officers were different. Rockville Centre Police Department Patrol, Anti-Crime, and Traffic Enforcement Unit officers, in marked and unmarked police vehicles, are providing intensified patrols in the residential and commercial areas of the Village throughout the day and night tours, especially in the areas of these previous incidents. When there is an incident such as this, the police department takes several investigatory steps, to include, but not limited to: Identifying the owner of the vehicle, identifying the subject, checking the status of the vehicle to see if it is stolen, speaking with the registered owner of the vehicle to ascertain the identity of the driver, and checking law enforcement databases regarding the owner and driver of the vehicle. Additionally, our department works closely with the Nassau County Police Department Intelligence/Lead Development Center to determine if any similar incidents have occurred in other areas of Nassau County with these same vehicles or individuals.

To combat quality of life and parking violations, one Rockville Centre Police officer has been dedicated to patrol the Central Business District on foot from 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM daily. This officer may be assigned to emergency calls for service as needed due to the high call volume of the department but will return to the area as soon as practical.

The Rockville Centre Police Department has been in contact with the Nassau County Department of Social Services and are actively working with their social workers to enhance our outreach efforts and to be able to provide greater assistance to homeless individuals our officers are assisting within the Village.

For all emergencies call 911 immediately.
To report non-emergency incidents, call 516-766-1500.

THIS FACEBOOK PAGE IS NOT MONITORED, AS OUR OFFICERS AND DETECTIVES ARE ON PATROL AND ANSWERING CALLS FOR SERVICE. CALL THE POLICE DEPARTMENT DIRECTLY WITH ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.

In an era of ever-advancing technology, criminals are finding innovative ways to exploit it. The Rockville Centre Police Department, led by Commissioner Randy Dodd, is committed to ensuring the safety and security of our community. As such, we are issuing a vital warning to all residents who own high-tech vehicles.

Recent incidents of vehicle thefts involving high-tech vehicles have prompted us to provide you with the top essential tips to safeguard your vehicles. Your cooperation and vigilance are crucial in preventing such crimes from happening in our community.

1. Secure Your Key Fob:
The number one precaution you can take is to keep your key fob away from your vehicle and out of sight from potential thieves. Do not leave it near your car or close to any windows or doors in your home. Criminals can use relay devices to intercept signals, allowing them to access and steal your vehicle easily. Some find using a metal closed box to store keys is helpful.

2. Double-Check Doors and Windows:
Always ensure that your vehicle is properly locked, and windows are fully closed when leaving it unattended. Criminals often target unlocked cars for easy access.

3. Park in Well-Lit Areas:
When parking your high-tech vehicle, choose well-lit and populated areas, especially at night. Avoid dimly lit or secluded locations that may attract criminals.

4. Be Cautious with Spare Keys:
If you keep spare keys for your vehicle, ensure they are stored securely and not easily accessible. Criminals may search for spare keys inside your home.

5. Install a Vehicle Tracking System:
Consider investing in a GPS-based vehicle tracking system. These devices can help authorities locate your vehicle quickly in case of theft, increasing the chances of recovery.

6. Utilize Steering Wheel Locks:
Using an old school visible steering wheel lock is a deterrent for potential thieves. It adds an extra layer of security and makes it more challenging for them to steal your vehicle.

The safety of our community is our top priority. The Rockville Centre Police Department wants to assure residents that we are taking proactive measures to combat this threat. We are increasing patrol presence, especially during the midnight hours, to enhance the security of our neighborhoods.

Commissioner Dodd urges all residents to stay vigilant and implement these essential safety tips to protect their high-tech vehicles. By working together, we can make Rockville Centre a safer place to live and drive.

Car Thefts Soar Across The Nation

As car thefts soar across our nation, the Rockville Centre Police Department has remained vigilant to protect our residents and their property. While we have had few cases here in our Village, a recent incident occurred where a criminal entered a resident’s home to retrieve car keys before stealing a vehicle. Our Department continues to aggressively investigate this incident and are utilizing camera footage and Automated License Plate Readers along with other policing tools to apprehend the subjects. As always, our officers will continue to actively patrol our neighborhoods at night, specifically searching for suspicious vehicles and individuals in hopes of preventing any future thefts.

This recent burglary serves as an important reminder for all residents to take preventative steps to secure your homes, garages, and motor vehicles. The following burglary prevention tips will help to make you and your family safe while also showing you how to become a part of the Rockville Centre Police team, so that we may serve and protect our Village, together.

- Lock all windows, and exterior doors, gates, or garage doors that provide entry into your property.
- No lock, regardless of its quality, can be 100% effective. Ask a locksmith for advice on your situation.
- Do not leave car keys, purses, money, or valuables in sight of any windows.
- While at home, store your key fob in a metal box to block the electromagnetic field.
- Have adequate exterior lighting. A motion-sensitive light is recommended.
- Ensure your exterior lights are mounted out of reach, so a burglar can’t easily unscrew a light bulb.
- Use a timer to switch lights on and off at various hours during the day and night, to make it look like someone is home when you are away.
- Drill a 3/16” hole on a slight downward slant through the inside window frame and halfway into the outside frame- place a nail in the hole to secure and window that you do not typically open.
- Be a good neighbor. If you notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood, call 911 immediately.
- Consider getting a monitored alarm system with audible warnings to scare intruders away. With a monitored alarm system, you would get a phone call from your alarm company first to assess the situation and, if the situation warrants, the police would be called to the scene.
- Don’t allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers, or flyers to build up while you are away. Arrange with the Post Office to hold your mail or arrange for a friend or neighbor to take them regularly.

Here are some ways to help protect your vehicle:

- Keep your vehicle locked at all times, even while driving. Unlocked doors are easy targets.
- When parked, never leave your keys in the car. Ensure windows are fully closed to prevent a thief from trying to open the door from the inside.
- Never leave your car running and unattended. Even if your doors are locked, a carjacker only has to break a window to get in.
- Avoid leaving valuables inside your vehicle. Keep high-value items like phones, purses, or other valuables hidden. Put valuables in your trunk before you get where you’re going.
- Do not leave your vehicle title in the car.
- Install an anti-theft system in your vehicle if it doesn’t have one. - Thieves are reluctant to steal vehicles if they know the cars can be recovered quickly. Many insurers offer discounts for the types of systems listed below.
- Thieves prefer to work in the dark. Be particularly cautious at night about where you park your car. Park it in a well-lit area if possible.

Mineola, New York – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano and District Attorney Kathleen Rice will host a Gun Buy Back event on Saturday, October 11, 2014, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Christian Light Baptist Church, located at 620 Park Place in Long Beach.

Asset forfeiture funds from the Nassau County Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office are utilized to fund the Gun Buy Back Program, which is strictly anonymous. Individuals are paid $100 cash for every turned in operable rifle, $200 cash for each turned in operable handgun and $400 cash for each turned in operable assault rifle. Not accepted are: licensed guns, BB Guns, air pistols and replicas. Guns must be transported in the trunk of the car, unloaded and placed in a shoe box, or plastic/paper bag.

“The Gun Buyback Program, using asset forfeiture dollars, has taken nearly 3,500 guns off our streets before they fell into the wrong hands,” said County Executive Mangano. “Community support is critical to the success of this program, and I thank the Christian Light Baptist Church for hosting this effort to take illegal fi****ms off our streets. By working together, we can continue to ensure that Nassau County remains the safest suburban County in the nation.”

“Every buyback event we hold reinforces our commitment to community-based law enforcement and ridding Nassau County of gun violence,” DA Rice said. “By removing these weapons from our neighborhoods, we eliminate the possibility of them being used in crimes or even accidental shootings in the home. I thank the Christian Light Baptist Church in Long Beach for partnering with Nassau County law enforcement in our fight to make our communities safer.”
