In November 1974, President Gerald Ford announced and authorized the first National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week. The American College of Emergency Physicians were influential in establishing EMS week when President Ford declared it in 1974.

This year marks the 52nd annual observance dedicated to EMS professionals. The theme for EMS week in 2026 is "Improving Outcomes, Together". EMS is the first line of patient care in a medical emergency. Every year we recognize those in EMS who provide the compassion and care to the patients and communities they serve. I ask that we please take some time this week and help spread awareness and appreciation for all EMS professionals.
