Many thanks to Logan Parker of the Maine Natural History Observatory and the Maine Nightjar Monitoring Project for his fascinating sneak peek at some of the data that will be found in the new Maine Bird Atlass (2017-2022). It was especially interesting to learn how Logan and others gather the the information for their various studies, and especially alarming to see some of the charts that detailed the decline of aerial insectivores in Maine. For more info about the Maine Bird Atlas, join Logan and Maine Audubon for an online presentation on Sept. 16: details at: https://maineaudubon.org/events/maine-bird-atlas-final-presentation-online/ Thank you to our program partner AMC Maine for bringing Logan to the Rockport Library. Join us at the library for our next program in this series on Wednesday, October 16, at 6 p.m. for a presentation called: Working Forests, Thriving Communities

A big THANK YOU to Valerie Neal who took time out of her vacation to join us at the Rockport Library for a presentation about her new book "On a Mission: The Smithsonian History of US Women Astronauts." The best speakers care deeply about their subject matter, and it was SO clear that Valerie is extremely proud of the 61 female astronauts she profiled. Copies of the book are available for sale at Barnswallow Books, and the library has a copy as well. Check out the book and get to know these extraordinary women who made, and continue to make, history ALSO herstory.

From Sept. 2 - Oct. 29, artist and writer Judy O'Dell will exhibit a collection of photographs at the Rockport Public Library in a show entitled, “What the Glaciers Left Behind.” The display in the library’s Marine Room will feature images of glacial erratics that O’Dell created using a digital camera modified to record infrared light. O’Dell’s show of photography will be accompanied by a few selections of geologically-inspired book art created by Sandy Weisman. Glacial erratics are rocks or boulders that have been moved by ice and deposited in new locations where they may seem “out-of-place” since they may not match native bedrock of the area. The public will have an opportunity to learn more about the topic in greater detail on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 6 p.m. when Brooks McKinney, Ph.D. gives his presentation “Glacial Erratics: Strange Rocks from Stranger Times” at the Rockport Library.
