PRESS RELEASE:

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office is excited to introduce our K9 team, Deputy William Reed and K9 Roo.

We would like to congratulate them on acquiring their tracking certification. Over the past six months, they have successfully completed the 200-hour K9 tracking school through All Points Maine Police Canines. K9 Roo is a one-year-old Dutch Shepherd from Cloverfield K9 in Vermont.

Deputy Reed and K9 Roo will be able to aid in searches including for missing children, or those with dementia who may be lost. The team will also be used for searching and tracking suspects who may have fled a crime scene.

Deputy Reed has been with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office since November of 2024. He and K9 Roo can be seen making their rounds in the community. Roo loves meeting new people. If you see them out and about, please take the opportunity to say hello.

The Sheriff's Office is deeply saddened by the loss of Officer Ford.
Officer Ford has made a tremendous impact on the community that he served. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and those who had the pleasure of working with him.

It is with the deepest regrets the Rockport Police Department announces the unexpected passing of Officer Travis Ford on July 6, 2025, due to cardiac complications. Officer Ford graduated from University of Maine with a degree in Criminal Justice in 1995 and then went on to graduate from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in May of 2000. He has been a Rockport Police Officer from April 1999 to present and served as Sergeant for several years. Officer Ford served his community to the best of his ability each and every day. Travis was always cool under pressure no matter what the call was. He had the ability to talk with anyone no matter what the situation. Travis was one of the kindest, friendliest, and compassionate people you could ever meet. Your department, and community thank you for everything you have done during your career with Rockport PD. Travis you left us way to soon. We all had more calls to go on and stories to tell together. We can never thank you enough for making us all better humans by following your lead. You will be missed greatly old friend! I'm sure you'll be watching over all of us because that's just who you are. Until we meet again rest easy, because we'll have some stories to tell!

You may have seen some police vehicles and runners yesterday and today and wondered what was happening. The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics is the event you saw, which had two legs run through Knox County, Warren to Thomaston yesterday and Rockland to Camden today.

The LETR includes athletes and officers running with a torch across the state to the opening ceremonies of our local Special Olympics competition. The Special Olympics Maine 2025 Summer Games will occur from June 6 to 8 at the University of Maine in Orono.

Retired Wichita, Kansas, Police Chief Richard LaMunyon started the first Touch Run in 1981 with just a handful of athletes and officers to raise awareness for individuals with intellectual disabilities, which affect approximately 1 in 10 people worldwide. Today, several hundred thousand athletes and officers run torches to their local Special Olympic competitions in over 27 countries.

If you want to learn more about Special Olympics Maine and how you can support special athletes and individuals with intellectual disabilities, you can visit your local law enforcement agency or check out this site: https://www.somaine.org/get-involved/law-enforcement-torch-run/

Best of luck to all of this year's special athletes!

At long last, we now have a boat in the water that is ready and able to patrol the waters of Knox County! The journey to this moment has spanned numerous years and several Sheriffs, but we are finally able to provide service to all our island residents and visitors year-round.

We took the maiden voyage today, with our "Captain", Sgt. Gosselin, from Rockland to Vinalhaven and back again; it was a beautiful day for the trip: she was extremely excited for the voyage!

For those unfamiliar, Knox County comprises an area of approximately 1,144 square miles; however, it is the second-smallest county by land area, which is approximately 365 square miles. Meaning that the remaining 779 square miles are water, which contains more than 200 islands that host residents and visitors all year long.

We want to extend our thanks to former Sheriff Tim Carroll for all his work in getting this project started; the Knox County Commissioners and Budget Committee for realizing that Knox County has been in desperate need of a boat for some time and for allocating funding to make it happen; and the City of Rockland for providing us space to dock!

Memorial Day is a day to remember those who lost their lives for our freedom, and many of us celebrate it throughout the entire weekend. Please be gracious and take a moment this weekend to remember those who sacrificed, but also enjoy your freedom; those who sacrificed would want you to!

US flags are flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon to symbolize our mourning, and at noon, they are returned to full-staff to symbolize our nation's continued resolve and appreciation for those who served.

To the brave men and women who stood up for freedom. Who answered the call and fought for our nation. Who paid the ultimate price and never came back. To the American service member, we thank you. To the mothers and fathers who raised a hero, the brothers and sisters with an empty space, the sons and daughters who have only memories, and the partners who bear the void with pride. To all who have lost a service member they love, no gift could repay your sacrifice, no tribute could match our admiration, no word could contain our gratitude, but it still deserves to be said; we remember you, we salute you, and we honor you this Memorial Day, and every day!

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Ryan Colson on his graduation today from the 47th Basic Law Enforcement Training Program, an 18-week resident course held at the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

Dep. Colson's graduation is a milestone for us that we have not seen since before the pandemic; we are fully staffed. Dep. Colson will spend a few more weeks participating in our in-house field training program and is expected to be conducting his own patrols sometime in July.

Congratulations Dep. Colson, we know you will serve our community well!

Deputies Palmer and Reed, along with K-9 Roo, thoroughly enjoyed their visit to Prescott Memorial School last week. We’re proud to have Deputy Palmer as our D.A.R.E. instructor and very thankful that he, Deputy Reed and K-9 Roo were able to visit Mrs. Gagne’s 5th grade class. They put on a K-9 demo, and had a great conversation with the students about Law Enforcement careers and involvement in our schools and community.
