Earlier this month we conducted inspections on 12 fixed aids to navigation in the Boston area! We replaced multiple dayboards and lights to ensure waterways were marked well for commerce and recreational boaters. We also conducted line-throwing training with U.S. Coast Guard Station Gloucester!

Each winter, the Coast Guard conducts Operation Renew, a vital icebreaking mission to keep the Hudson River open for maritime commerce. This operation ensures that fuel, heating oil, and essential goods continue to reach communities and industries in the Northeast despite harsh winter conditions. Our crews worked tirelessly this season to maintain safe navigation and support the regional economy. As the operation comes to a close and we look forward to warmer spring weather, we reflect on what we've accomplished:

✅45 ship escorts through icy waters
✅13 ship breakouts to free vessels stuck in ice
✅325 drone imagery flights by partner agencies for ice reports
✅11 million barrels of petroleum and home heating oil delivered
✅395,000 tons of cargo kept on the move

A strong, navigable Hudson River is critical for local economies and regional energy needs. Thanks to our crews for braving the cold and keeping the river open!

This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the following Coast Guard cutters:

⚓Hawser
⚓ Katherine Walker
⚓ Oak
⚓ Penobscot Bay
⚓ Sturgeon Bay
⚓ Thunder Bay

We also appreciate the support of our partner agencies in keeping the river safe and navigable!

Last week, CGC THUNDER BAY and CGC BRIDLE conducted icebreaking operations together, to enable a barge delivery on the Penobscot River. We saw nearly a foot of ice in the northern section of the river, but together were able to ensure timely delivery of valuable maritime commerce!
