06/01/2026

At Oceanside High School we believe in developing strong meaningful relationships and fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all students. June is an exciting month of full of various celebrations and recognition of our community. We believe that celebrating Pride Month is a great way to celebrate all members of our community and is an essential part of promoting acceptance, understanding, and equality. The beauty of Pride month is that we all have a place. Some of us may not identify as part of the LGBT community, but we can all identify ourselves as allies and ensure all members of our school community feel recognized, safe and included.

Why is it important to be an ally?
As reported by the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey
*1 in 7 students identify as being part of the LGBT community.
LGBTQ students are twice as likely to feel unsafe as school and experience a higher rate of bullying and offensive comments or attacks at school.
*LGBTQ students are less likely to have support from adults within their community.
*LGBTQ students are twice as likely to feel depressed or hopeless and four times as likely to have seriously considered su***de.
*However, LGBT youth who felt supported by their community reported attempting su***de at less than half the rate of those who do not feel a high level of support.

This is why we believe it is essential to provide a safe and inclusive environment for everyone at Oceanside High School. We believe that being the best ally to members of the Oceanside community is essential to this. Some simple ways to do this include:
*Speak up if you hear someone misgendering or misnaming someone. It is not just the job of the person who is misnamed or misgendered to correct people.
*It is ok to make a mistake. If you do, just make a quick simple correction and move on.
*Normalize the practice of acknowledging pronouns by being open to sharing your own with introductions. If someone uses multiple pronouns, ask if they have a preference.
*Don’t assume binary gender and don’t split up “boys and girls”
Respect and honor individuals' chosen names, pronouns, and gender identities. Be mindful of using inclusive language and avoid making assumptions about someone's sexual orientation or gender identity.
*Take the initiative to learn about LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and the challenges faced by the community.
*By celebrating Pride Month and actively being a good ally, we create an environment where every student feels safe, supported, and empowered to be their authentic selves.

Together, we can build a community that embraces diversity, champions equality, and prepares our students for a more inclusive world.
