I had the opportunity to join Mayor Merdian, city leadership, and the community down in Sterling this past weekend for the grand opening of their new Riverfront Park. This project kicks off a downtown redevelopment plan that was made possible through River’s Edge Redevelopment Zone status which I was happy to work with Sterling on last year.

The Rockford region is stronger when we build relationships throughout our state. Illinois is stronger when we use our economic development tools to lift up communities both big and small.

As session concluded, I’m proud to share the strategic bill package I sent to the Governor this session—centered on practical solutions that move our communities forward and create real, lasting impact for the people we serve.

Our Chief of Staff presented on resumes and interviews earlier this year as part of the Getting Ahead Program.

This afternoon he was excited to join the participants as they graduated from the program. The participants have set and achieved personal goals, found opportunities to increase their income, and embarked on new educational and advancement opportunities.

It was great to celebrate the graduates who have positioned themselves to not just get by, but get ahead in their lives.

Last night we passed a fiscally and socially responsible budget focused on addressing the challenges families talk about around the kitchen table every night while maintaining investments in critical programs.

Highlights from this year’s budget include:

- $2.5 million in local capital and operational investments that will support youth programming, veterans, violence prevention, infrastructure improvements, business development, libraries, and more.
- $1.5 million in new funding for the home modification program.
- food insecurity, investments aim to support the over 100,000 Illinoisans removed from SNAP and critical investments in affordable school lunches.
- $300 million in new funding for classroom education, full funding for after school programs, and restoration of property tax relief grants for schools.
- a back-to-school sales tax holiday to cut costs on clothing, office supplies, and hygiene items for families.
- freezing the state gas tax to address skyrocketing fuel prices.
- fully funding, public safety initiatives including homelessness prevention and community-based violence prevention.
- fully funding safety-net hospitals with an additional $10 million dedicated to supporting FQHC’s for the most vulnerable families.
