Several of your Rockford firefighters responded and worked several hours assisting the Plainfield Twp Fire Department both at this incident and also the explosion on Rollaway NE the previous morning.

Update (2 a.m.)- Crews have cleared the scene and the roadway is back open.

——

Kroes Street is closed between Brewer and Childsdale avenues as we respond to a house fire in the 3800 block of Kroes Street.

The initial call came in around 8:29 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27.

Our first crew arrived to a well-involved fire with heavy smoke and a second alarm was called within minutes. Algoma Township, Alpine Township, Cannon Township, Sparta, and Rockford fire departments provided additional assistance, along with Rockford Ambulance.

Everyone inside the home safely evacuated and there are no reported injuries at this time. However, there is significant damage to the home.

As of 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, crews were putting out hot spots. Please avoid the area.

Rockford Public Safety is proud of our two members who participated in this morning's Race for the Red 5K in Grand Rapids this morning. This is the first time this event has been held in the Grand Rapids area.

Race for the Red is a 5K "race" to raise money for firefighters who've been diagnosed with cancer, offering support to them and their families. New this year, funds allocated to early detection screening within the fire departments! 100% of proceeds will be donated to Neighbors United non-profit. This first Grand Rapids event was organized by retired Grand Rapids firefighter Ed DeMaagd, who is also battling the disease.

Many completed this event in full firefighting turn out gear, including our two Rockford firefighters, as well as two from our neighbors, Algoma and Courtland Township Fire Departments. Departments north of 10 Mile Rd were well represented!

Just like the Kent County Sheriff's Office, we are seeing an uptick in Scam complaints. These are some good tips to help you avoid losing money that most likely will be unable to be recovered. One of the newer scams, is to have you deposit money into bitcoin ATMs at gas stations. No legitimate entity will request you to do that. Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Look for the red flags 🚩 🚩

Stop. Think. Verify.

Scammers are pretending to be banks, courts, and law enforcement. They may claim your account is compromised, you owe unpaid fines, or you’ll be arrested if you don’t pay.

They can also spoof phone numbers to look legitimate.

Law enforcement and courts will not demand payment by phone, gift cards, cryptocurrency machines, wire transfers, or cash withdrawals.

When in doubt, HANG UP and verify directly.

Rockford Public Safety Fire Services was honored to assist Walker City Fire Department this past Saturday, May 9, by providing station coverage so their firefighters could attend the funeral of Fire Chief Russell “Rusty” Shoultz without interruption. Chief Shoultz passed away far too soon on May 1, 2026.

Our department staffed Fire Station No. 1 on Remembrance Road, while Wyoming Fire Department covered Station 2 and Kentwood Fire Department covered Station 3. During our coverage assignment, we responded to two fire alarm calls.

We would also like to thank Sparta Fire Department for providing a firefighter to help ensure we maintained a full crew, as well as Oakfield Township Fire Department and Sand Lake Fire Department for offering additional personnel support if needed.
