America turns 250 this year... and we're celebrating the most patriotic way possible: by seeing how many hot dogs you can eat in 2 minutes. 🌭🇺🇸

Compete in our Hot Dog Eating Contest at America’s 250th Celebration – Rockdale, TX - July 4th at Fair Park for a chance to win $100 cash and eternal bragging rights. 💸

12 hot dogs. 2 minutes. One champion. 🏆

Pre-registered contestants will receive the official start time. There will be a sign up sheet on the fairgrounds for anyone who would like to compete. Contestants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

Love your library? Help shape its future!

The City of Rockdale is currently accepting applications for the Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library Advisory Board.

We're looking for community-minded individuals who are passionate about literacy, lifelong learning, and helping our library continue to thrive for generations to come.

As a board member, you'll help:
📚 Advocate for the library and its services
💡 Provide input on programs, services, and future priorities
🤝 Connect community needs with library opportunities
🎯 Assist with long-term planning and strategic goals
🎁 Support fundraising, grants, and special projects

Board members serve as volunteers and are expected to:
✅ Attend quarterly meetings
✅ Volunteer at least 2 hours per month at the library
✅ Serve a three-year term

Applicants must be current Lucy Hill Patterson Memorial Library cardholders.

Applications are open to residents within the City's ETJ (the area just outside city limits).

Here's what you missed at yesterday's Planning & Zoning Commission meeting:

⚖️ Margie Dunkel was sworn in as the newest Planning & Zoning Commissioner.

🗣️ During Citizens Communications, a local business owner requested that the City consider amending the Allowed Use Table to permit RV Parks within city limits. RV Parks are not currently an allowed use under the City's zoning ordinance. Any amendment to the ordinance would ultimately require City Council approval.

🏡 The Rockdale Housing Authority requested a rezone for properties on San Gabriel to allow for a potential manufactured home community.

✅ The Planning & Zoning Commission voted to recommend approval to City Council.

🌳 City Planner Benjamin Blanchard recommended the development be governed by a Planned Unit Development (PUD), which would establish minimum tree and shrub requirements for each lot, require a masonry wall and entry signage along San Gabriel, and require roadway improvements with asphalt paving.

🚜 Code Enforcement reported 160 cases this fiscal year, with high grass and weeds accounting for the majority of violations.

📋 Of those cases, 119 have been resolved, 33 remain open, and 8 have advanced to municipal court.

🏗️ Development Services issued 14 permits during the month of May, including building, electrical, and plumbing permits.

💰 More than $121,000 was invested in local property improvements through projects such as remodels, roofing, fencing, and window replacements.

📅 The Planning & Zoning Commission holds a regularly scheduled workshop on the third Tuesday of each month. This month's workshop will be held on June 16, and citizens are welcome to attend.

Rockdale is looking pretty patriotic these days. 🇺🇸

As we prepare for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, our Public Works team has been hard at work installing American flag poles throughout the community. A special thank you to RIOT for sponsoring this initiative and helping make it possible.

We would also like to recognize our local VFW and American Legion for their work creating a commemorative flag display honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their efforts help ensure the meaning behind this holiday remains front and center in our community.

If you see our crews working alongside the highway, please slow down and use extra caution to help keep them safe.
