THANK YOU to the wonderful corporate volunteers who joined us this week at the Arverne East Nature Preserve, on the Rockaway Peninsula. ๐Ÿ™

Together we removed many bags-worth of invasive vegetation, planted hundreds of plugs of native species, and removed hundreds of pounds of debris from the boardwalk and shoreline. ๐Ÿ’ช

These larger scale ecological efforts would be difficult to achieve without such motivated corporate volunteers. ๐ŸŒฑ ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ ๐ŸŒŽ

If youโ€™d like to get your colleagues outside and do some good for the environment, check out our corporate volunteering page at JBRPC.org/corporate-volunteering OR the link in our bio ๐Ÿ”—

Our friends at Amateur Astronomers Association host free monthly observing sessions at Floyd Bennett Field, and there's a whole lot going on in our night skies right now. ๐Ÿ”ญ

According to Gothamist, "Summer stargazing starts this month with the rise of an astronomical phenomenon known as the Summer Triangle. The center of our own galaxy, the Milky Way, is one of the evening highlights of the summer skies. June will also get a double-billing of two meteor showers."

Floyd Bennett Field, situated away from the city's most intense light pollution, is prime for celestial observing. ๐ŸŒŒ

If you'd like to learn about future observing sessions, and other free activities this spring and summer at Floyd Bennett Field, head to JBRPC.org/fbf

A 55% loss in just 22 years. The Black-crowned Night Heron, historically the most abundant wading bird in our harbor, is vanishing fast. Jamaica Bay is a principal habitat for this famous bird.

New research led by NYC Bird Alliance published in the scientific journal Conservation Science and Practice confirms that without action, these birds face local as soon as 2037.

The good news? We can save this bird.

๐ŸšจWeโ€™re rallying New Yorkers to call on city and state policymakers to support more research and institute better protections for .

โžก You can help by signing NYC Bird Alliance's petition!

๐Ÿ”ŽNYC Bird Alliance scientists are working to answer the big question: what is causing Black-crowned Night Heronโ€™s decline? Weโ€™ll be researching predation, human disturbance, water quality, and more.

Visit NYC Bird Alliance's website (๐Ÿ”— link in bio) to sign the petition, share your sightings and stories, and sign up for action alerts to protect this bird. The journey to save Black-crowned Night Heron is only just beginning!

Together, we will save this bird.

Thank you PS 62 - Magnet School of Computer Science and Innovation for joining us at Rockaway Beach last week!

We had a great time meeting more fiddler crabs, observing buried shells within the strata of the beach, and learning about the broader ecosystem of the Rockaway peninsula. ๐Ÿฆ€

This field trip was part of our Wild Neighbors Watch curriculum, which introduces local public school students to ecology in Brooklyn and Queens. ๐ŸŒŠ

Thank you Queens Public Library for collaborating with us on an excellent pollinator education program in Far Rockaway. ๐Ÿ

Participants created their own pots with the Teen Library's 3D printers, before decorating them and filling them with soil and a native flowering plant. In the process, we learned about the importance of pollinators to the local ecology of Rockaway and Jamaica Bay. ๐ŸŒน

Did you know Jamaica Bay has some of the best fishing in the Northeast? We're not bass-lighting you. ๐ŸŸ ๐Ÿ˜

On Saturday afternoon, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation ran a free fishing clinic at the Park at Beach 108 St. ๐ŸŽฃ

Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Gateway National Recreation Area spent the afternoon assisting and visiting with our neighbors. It was a great turnout, despite very windy conditions. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ

If you'd like to throw your line in the water at a later date, you can join us at Marine Park on July 16 or August 12 ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

Further fishing clinics around NYC and NY State are on NYS Department of Environmental Conservation's website.

THANK YOU to our friends at JFK Terminal 4 for helping us maintain the West Pond Living Shoreline at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge ๐Ÿ™

Last week, with their help, we installed over 2๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ plugs of native marsh cordgrass!

These new plantings will help the salt marsh grow and support its dense ecology, while protecting the freshwater West Pond from saltwater intrusion. ๐ŸŒฑ

Thank you JFK Terminal 4 for your support on this day, and all the work you do year-round to support the local environment! ๐ŸŒŠ

The West Pond Living Shoreline is a project of Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy and Gateway National Recreation Area โ€” who together have restored this marsh that was destroyed by Superstorm Sandy in 2012.

THANK YOU to the wonderful folks with Bloomberg Philanthropies, and all the other excellent volunteers who helped us clean Floyd Bennett Fieldโ€™s โ€œNorth 40โ€ natural area on Saturday! ๐Ÿ’™

We moved some MAJOR weight. 1๏ธโƒฃ4๏ธโƒฃ6๏ธโƒฃ volunteers collected 3๏ธโƒฃ6๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ0๏ธโƒฃ+ pounds of debris. ๐Ÿšฎ

The โ€œNorth 40โ€ is a beloved birding, hiking and fishing locale, and critical habitat for wildlife. New Yorkers (human or otherwise) owe a debt of gratitude to these volunteers. ๐Ÿ™

Join us at Edgemere Farm for a free, fun, hands-on program celebrating pollinators and their important role in our community! Designed for children ages 2โ€“10 and their caregivers, this interactive event will explore how bees, butterflies, and other pollinators help grow the food we eat and support healthy ecosystems right here in Rockaway. ๐Ÿ

Families will enjoy a guided garden tour, playful learning activities including making their own โ€œinsect hotelsโ€ using upcycled and foraged materials, and a chance to take home a native plant to support pollinators at home. Through exploration, movement, and discovery, participants will learn how caring for pollinators helps strengthen both the farm and our local environment. ๐ŸŒท

Pre-registration required. Head to JBRPC.org/events OR the link in our bio ๐Ÿ”—
