Frank G. & Caroline Young House

Frank G. & Caroline Young House Frank G. and Caroline Young House Built in 1907, the Young House was originally home to Frank G. and Caroline Young.

Frank co-owned Young and McCombs Department Store in downtown Rock Island, Illinois. Architect Leonard Drack, who lived next door, designed this home, and the builder was John Volk. The Young House displays the transition from Queen Anne to Colonial Revival architectural styles, pairing the ornate details and steeply pitched roof typical of Queen Anne structures with the classical design of Coloni

al Revival buildings. The home became a Rock Island City landmark in 1994 and is located in the Broadway Historic District (National Register of Historic Places 1998) just blocks from the Mississippi River. The current homeowners embarked on the home's complete restoration and renovation in 2003.

Oops, 3 years since our last 'old house' post! Lots of updates big and small. When squirrels eat your porch column corners, when city "rules" let previous 1980s owners build a garage with no footings flat on mississippi river soil (hint your garage moves after 5 decades of soil drainage), when contractors obliterate original solid red sandstone porch supports...you go with the flow, use diy skills, and carry on as caretakers of this 1907 beauty! After 22 years, some time finally arose to tackle a few interior enhancements, yay--a free curb-find furniture restoration, modern vintage look replacement sconces, new sofa & decor, incorporating family heirlooms and vintage items. What's next?...starting to touch up exterior paint, it's been 20 years (!!), new roof again, and then, some day...a kitchen renovation & new upstairs bathroom. Already have the new kitchen sink that's currently decorating our dining room floor and original cabinets stored in the basement! (Photos are captioned)

Yes! Old orginal windows are premium! Real old growth wood, quality glass, restorable. "New" and replacement windows are only new until they need replacing in 10, 20 years.

With the launch of my new book we’re talking windows all week long!
The Case For Historic Windows litigates the case against the replacement window industry and gives the restoration industry the long awaited facts they have been needing in the fight to preserve America’s windows!
