At our recent Women United breakfast, women from across York County stepped into a Household Survival Simulation designed to reflect the reality many ALICE® families face every day.
ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are hardworking individuals and families earning above the federal poverty line, but still struggling to afford basic necessities like childcare, housing, transportation, and healthcare.
Throughout the simulation, attendees were asked to navigate difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, and impossible tradeoffs while trying to keep their families afloat.
When asked to describe the experience afterward, women in the room shared words like:
“Stressful.”
“Emotional.”
“Messy.”
“Confused.”
“Terrifying.”
“Making sacrifices.”
“Living on hopes and prayers.”
“Stuck.”
One participant shared that even receiving a raise could create fear because it might mean losing benefits their family depends on.
The conversations that followed highlighted just how difficult these challenges can be for families and why support systems like In Her Corner are so important.
Through Women United’s In Her Corner initiative, United Way of York County is helping support childcare scholarships for parents pursuing education, workforce training, and career advancement. Because reliable childcare can be the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.
Thank you to every woman who showed up, engaged in the conversation, and continues to stand in the corner of families across York County đź’™
