Today marks the beginning of Pride Month, a time to celebrate the contributions, resilience, and impact of the LGBTQ+ community.

Throughout June, we join communities across the country in promoting acceptance, inclusivity, and love for all.

Together, we can help create a York County where everyone feels seen, supported, and valued.

At our recent Women United event, attendees participated in a Household Survival Simulation designed to reflect the reality many ALICE® families face every day. ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are hardworking families earning above the poverty line but still struggling to afford the basics.

During the simulation, participants worked through difficult decisions involving childcare, housing, transportation, and monthly bills.

One participant described the experience as feeling like a mom “holding all the plates in the air” while trying to keep everything from falling.

Another shared how losing childcare could mean losing a job.

Those conversations reinforced why Women United launched In Her Corner.

This initiative helps provide childcare support for parents pursuing education, workforce training, and career advancement because removing one barrier can change the path of an entire family. We have already seen that impact through women like Nadja, who now has a classroom of her own, and Shakira, who is now a registered nurse.

As we close out May, we invite you to help one more family move forward.

Did you know? Summer can be one of the hardest times of the year for working families. For many families, it’s not just a scheduling issue, it’s a financial one too.

Through initiatives like Women United’s In Her Corner, United Way of York County is helping support families as they navigate the “summer juggle” and work toward long-term stability.

Summer in South Carolina has a rhythm to it. Kids riding bikes through neighborhoods. Splash pads and baseball games. Weekends at the lake. Later sunsets and longer evenings outside. But behind the scenes, summer also becomes a season of coordination for many working families. Parents rearrange work...

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive such a success!

Thanks to the generosity of our community, 10,199 pounds of food were collected, helping provide approximately 8,500 meals for neighbors across York County.

A special thank you to the USPS workers and all the volunteers who helped collect, sort, and deliver donations throughout the day. Your hard work and dedication made this incredible community effort possible.

Additionally, thank you Cummins Inc for providing volunteers for each post office this year! We are grateful for your continued engagement with our work.

From donating food to volunteering time and supporting the drive in any way, every contribution helped make a real impact for local families facing food insecurity.

We are so grateful to be part of a community that continues to show up for one another.

Today we are celebrating not one, but TWO graduates from the York County Regional Chamber Non-Profit Management Certificate Program! 🎉

Emily Pate, Director of Collective Impact, and Courtney Beck Jurado, UWYC Board Director, participated in this 9-month program and gained crucial insight on program development, board governance, financial management, and more.

We are grateful for them growing their knowledge about non-profit management and for their continued service to UWYC and the York County community. đź’™

At our recent Women United breakfast, women from across York County stepped into a Household Survival Simulation designed to reflect the reality many ALICE® families face every day.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. These are hardworking individuals and families earning above the federal poverty line, but still struggling to afford basic necessities like childcare, housing, transportation, and healthcare.

Throughout the simulation, attendees were asked to navigate difficult decisions, unexpected setbacks, and impossible tradeoffs while trying to keep their families afloat.

When asked to describe the experience afterward, women in the room shared words like:

“Stressful.”
“Emotional.”
“Messy.”
“Confused.”
“Terrifying.”
“Making sacrifices.”
“Living on hopes and prayers.”
“Stuck.”

One participant shared that even receiving a raise could create fear because it might mean losing benefits their family depends on.

The conversations that followed highlighted just how difficult these challenges can be for families and why support systems like In Her Corner are so important.

Through Women United’s In Her Corner initiative, United Way of York County is helping support childcare scholarships for parents pursuing education, workforce training, and career advancement. Because reliable childcare can be the difference between staying stuck and moving forward.

Thank you to every woman who showed up, engaged in the conversation, and continues to stand in the corner of families across York County đź’™

Thank you to our Women United breakfast sponsors: York Technical College, Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina, and Atrium Health.

A special thank you to QTS, Pinnacle Financial Partners, and Atrium Health for supporting the In Her Corner initiative and helping make this work possible.

We are proud to announce the launch of In Her Corner, a new Women United initiative from United Way of York County.

This campaign was created to help parents pursuing education, career advancement, and long-term financial stability by providing support for one of the biggest barriers many families face: reliable, affordable childcare.

When childcare is in place, parents can attend class, complete certifications, stay employed, and keep moving toward a brighter future.

We have already seen the life-changing impact of this support through women like Nadja, who now has a classroom of her own, and Shakira, who is now a registered nurse.

Their stories are proof that when barriers are removed, families can thrive.

We invite you to learn more about In Her Corner and join us in helping York County families move forward.
