St. Joseph's House of Hospitality of Rochester, NY

St. Joseph's House of Hospitality of Rochester, NY Saint Joseph’s House of Hospitality is located in Rochester, New York. It is a Rochester Catholic Worker community.

It is a Rochester Catholic Worker community which provides food, clothing, shelter and spiritually-centered care to its guests. We share a firm belief in the God-given dignity of every human person; and we are committed to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, and the Works of Mercy as a way of life. Some of us live in houses; some of us live on the street; some of us have a room of our own, or a bed an

d a place to keep; some of us have a cot or piece of a couch or a patch of floor to return to each night; some hold special positions of power and roles with specific responsibilities; some do whatever they can. Our aim is is to try each day to “build a new society in the shell of the old” as we practice the various works of mercy; and labor with whatever resources, physical as well as spiritual, that we have been given at the time.

Turkeys can be dropped off during our open meal hours: M-F 11:30-12:15 Saturday 10-11. Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving!

Guided by the principles of service and solidarity, we strive to foster a welcoming environment that nurtures dignity, connection and hope for all.

Today is a big day: It is , the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes , and St. Joe’s House Coordinator Jasmin Reggler’s birthday!

https://www.roctheday.org/Causes-to-Support/St-Joseph-s-House-of-Hospitality

In many ways Jasmin is the heart and soul of St. Joe’s. She has given years to the house and has deeply shaped the way we do our work. She shows great compassion for all who enter: guest, worker, donor, and volunteer alike. She isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right or to challenge those around her to become the best versions of themselves. She consistently offers our house moral clarity and accountability to practice what we preach. Jasmin is everything a Catholic Worker should be: determined, faithful, humble, and compassionate.

She is a gift to our house and to Rochester. Please consider making a gift to St. Joe’s today in honor of Jasmin’s birthday and the way she is working for a more just world!

We know most public places close on holidays, leaving our unhoused guests nowhere to go. St. Joe's is open every holiday to serve food and provide a place of Community.

This 4th of July, we acknowledge that we still have a long way to go before everyone is truly free. Tomorrow, after the celebrations and fireworks have died down, we will continue our daily work of striving for a deeper and more expansive freedom for all.

Our thanks go out to everyone who has responded to our call for food supplies! We can still use donations of those items listed in our previous post. In addition, new needs have presented themselves:
- Hygiene supplies for our free shower program - soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, etc.
- Ground coffee. Coffee is fundamental to the hospitality we offer! Creamer and sugar is also always helpful.

Thank you in advance for your care for the most marginalized members of our community.

-- Call for Community Support --

As a Catholic Worker house, we rely entirely on our community to support us in supporting our most vulnerable neighbors. The combination of inflation and drastic food stamp cuts has both increased the need for food in our neighborhood and made it more difficult for us to meet that need. Alongside our regular hot meals we are now also offering grocery items Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays. Please consider joining us in our practice of the Works of Mercy by donating needed supplies:

Tuna
Soup
Peanut Butter
Jelly
Canned or dried beans
Rice
Pasta
Tomato Sauce
Other non-perishable goods and basic grocery items

If you have questions please call Jasmin @ 585-314-8028

Thank you for your continued support of our work and movement!

UPDATE: Thanks to the generosity of our community we were able to repair our freezer! It is back up and running and we are grateful for the support you all continue to offer us and our neighbors! Thank you!

Unfortunately, our walk-in freezer broke down on us early this week. It is in need of significant repair and we lost a great deal of the food we use to keep our neighbors and community nourished. Our meals and hospitality rely entirely on the generosity of our community, benefactors and supporters. Please consider donating to help us repair the freezer and replenish our food stores!

WE NEED HELP!

Several years ago we asked for the community’s help to maintain our building. Through your generous donations we were able to replace all the windows in our building and work on other minor repairs. It’s time again that we are calling on the community to help. Our roof and ceiling are falling apart. If you can provide financial assistance, please send a check or money order with “Building Fund” in the memo. We appreciate any help we can get and we are thankful that we’ve been able to stay in this building for 81 years.
