ABOUT US

The Department of Public Safety serves an active community of over 45,000 students, faculty and staff. Each year, we receive more than 300,000 calls for service - an average of over 800 a day. Our officers provide services to more than 75,000 of these callers and file approximately 8,000 incident reports a year. The Public Safety Department is made up of 143 employees. Public Safety patr

ol University properties - including the River Campus, Medical Center, South Campus, Eastman School and other University owned property - 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to responding to emergencies - fires, accidents, and physical crimes - Public Safety staff provide a wide range of non-emergency services.

This week, DPS Officers toured the new Strong Memorial Hospital tower and Emergency Department expansion as part of our ongoing familiarization and preparedness efforts. Understanding the layout of these new facilities is essential so that, when we are called upon, our officers can respond quickly, navigate efficiently, and provide effective support where it is needed most.

The University of Rochester Department of Public Safety was proud to participate in this year’s Lilac Festival Parade!

It was a great opportunity to connect with our community, celebrate one of Rochester’s most beloved traditions, and share in a day filled with fun, smiles, and hometown pride. Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer along the parade route and thank you for allowing us to be part of such a wonderful event!

During National Nurses Week, the University of Rochester Department of Public Safety had the honor of showing a small token of appreciation to the incredible nurses who work tirelessly every single day to care for others.

Our officers delivered cookie trays to the Strong Memorial hospital’s Emergency Department and CPEP Nurses to thank these dedicated healthcare professionals for their compassion, hard work, and commitment to keeping our community healthy and safe.

Whether it’s a long shift, a late night, or a difficult day, nurses continue to show up with professionalism and heart. We are grateful for everything you do and proud to recognize the vital role you play within our hospital family.

Thank you to all nurses , not just this week, but every week. We appreciate you! 💙🍪
