BEHIND THE BADGE | CHIEF BOUDREAU

The wait is over.

After introducing our new Behind the Badge series, we’ve seen your comments and questions asking when the first spotlight was coming. Well, it’s finally here.

And who better to kick things off than Rochester Police Chief Boudreau?

Behind the Badge is an opportunity for our community to get to know the people behind the uniforms a little better: what brought them into law enforcement, what keeps them motivated, and even a few things you might never guess about them.

For our very first installment, we sat down with Chief Boudreau and asked him three questions:

1. What inspired you to become a police officer?

My father talking to me about this profession being a good solid career as he had a close friend who was a police officer. Through my high school years, I had the opportunity to interact with some Rochester Officers who used to come to the football off season weightroom to workout with us. These connections really got me interested in this as a career.

2. What is your favorite part about serving the community?

Having the opportunity to influence and give back to the community who helped to shape me as a young man. Making Rochester better for the next generation, for my own children as they become adults.

3. What’s something most people wouldn’t know about you?

Overall I am not a very interesting person. But when I step away from the uniform, I enjoy working out, working with my hands to build things.

What is the most memorable stop to date that they’ve had?

Most memorable stop to date- Was not actually my traffic stop. When I was a Lt on an early Sunday morning shift I gave the shift directions to everyone to be focusing on traffic enforcement. On of the new officers who was still in field training made a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation. The officer in training made contact with the driver and passenger while the field training officer watched closely. Both officers went back to the cruiser and when the trainee began running the routine checks on the driver the training officer asked him if he knew who he had pulled over, to which the trainee stated he didn’t. It was at that point the training officer who recognized the occupants of the vehicle told his trainee the driver was the Lt’s father………

With the first day of school for most Rochester students approaching this week, it is that time of year again to be more vigilant and to adjust your driving habits.

Student’s will be walking to and from school, crossing in crosswalks, getting on/off the bus and traffic will be more congested and slower in school zones during drop off and pick up hours.

All drivers should be mindful of school zones and school bus safety as drivers haven’t had to drive with school bus drop-offs, pick-ups, or kids walking to and from school these last few months, so now is the time to refresh your memory.

Here are some school zone driving safety tips to keep in mind:

• Be aware of school zone signals and always obey the speed limits.
• When entering a school zone, be sure to slow down and obey all of the traffic laws.
• Always stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children.
• Watch out for school crossing guards and obey their signals.
• Be aware of and watch out for children near schools, bus stops, sidewalks, the streets, in a school parking lot, and more.
• Never pass other vehicles while driving in a school zone.
• Never change lanes while driving in a school zone.
• Never make U-Turns while driving in a school zone.
• Never text while driving and remember that NH has a completely hands-free while driving law.
• Unless licensed to do so, never use handicapped or emergency vehicle lanes or spaces to drop off or pick up children at school.

Your attention to active red bus signals and stop signs, your speed, crosswalks, and your surroundings is paramount and helping keep Rochester students safe.

BEHIND THE BADGE: GET TO KNOW YOUR ROCHESTER POLICE OFFICERS

We’re excited to introduce a new series here at the Rochester Police
Department: Behind the Badge.

Our officers are more than the uniform and badge you see while they’re working in the community. Each has their own story, experiences, interests, and reasons for choosing a career in law enforcement.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing members of our department and giving you an opportunity to learn a little more about the people who serve Rochester every day.

We asked our officers a few questions about themselves, including what inspired them to become a police officer, what they enjoy most about serving the Rochester community, and a little about who they are outside of work.

We hope Behind the Badge gives our community an opportunity to put some faces to the uniforms and get to know the people behind them.

We’d also like to hear from you. Is there something you’ve always
wanted to ask one of our officers? Leave your question or suggestion in the comments, and you may see it featured in a future Behind the Badge spotlight.

**Traffic Advisory**
Due to a motor vehicle accident on Salmon Falls Rd, in the area of the Highland St intersection, traffic is backed up and delayed while emergency crews tend to the scene and remove vehicles from the roadway. No serious injuries resulted, however a truck towing a trailer hauling 3 vehicles may have dislodged from the truck and did tip over.

Congratulations to three officers released to solo patrol! Officers Brett Palladino, Devin Bernatchez, and Ethan Sauriol have each completed the rigorous RPD field training program and out serving the City of Rochester. Be sure to congratulate them and welcome them to our community! Each officer is shown with Chief Boudreau after receiving their collar brass, signifying the milestone.

Congratulations to Detective Matthew Flathers for completing 20 years of service as a police officer here at Rochester PD! Detective Flathers has accomplished so much in his time, including being one of the first members of our Crisis Intervention Team, one of the first members of our Evidence Collection Team, a Field Training Officer, and he remains an active member of the county SWAT team! Be sure to congratulate Detective Flathers on this milestone and thank him for two decades of service!

🎨🚔 National Night Out Fun!

National Night Out is all about bringing our community together, and a few members of Rochester PD found themselves with some slightly different assignments for the evening!

Officer Simms put her artistic skills to work, providing face painting for kids and families, while Officer McPherson was busy handing out Rochester Police Department bracelets and spending time with members of the community.

We also had a visit from Junior Officer Wyatt, who wasted no time checking out one of our police motorcycles. Judging by the picture, he looked just about ready to take it out for a spin! 🏍️😂 Unfortunately for Wyatt, we’re going to need to see a driver’s license and a few more birthdays before we hand over the keys.

Events like National Night Out give us an opportunity to step away from our everyday duties, have some fun, and build relationships with the people we serve.

Thank you to everyone who came out, said hello, got their face painted, grabbed a bracelet, checked out our equipment, and helped make National Night Out a great evening! 🚔🎨💙

And Wyatt, we’ll keep the motorcycle warmed up for you. 😎🏍️

🚔 Welcome to Rochester PD!

The Rochester Police Department is proud to welcome three new officers to our team!

Last night, Jordon Hunold, Drake Marston, and Joseph Luchsinger officially took their oath and were sworn in as Rochester Police Officers.

Please join us in congratulating them as they begin this next chapter of their law enforcement careers. We look forward to watching them grow, serve, and become part of the Rochester community.
