How can you tell if you are getting the STAR benefit?

Homeowners can look at their school tax bill to see if they are getting a STAR benefit. See the image below for examples of how the school tax bill looks with:

· the STAR exemption (a deduction on your bill),
· the STAR credit (a check mailed to you or direct deposited), or
· no STAR benefit at all.

If your school tax bill does not show a STAR benefit, and your property is your primary residence, you can sign up with New York State at www.tax.ny.gov/star or by calling 518-457-2036.

Are you wondering when you’ll receive your STAR check?

New York expects to begin issuing STAR credits in September to eligible homeowners in Irondequoit who are enrolled in the STAR credit program. If you are eligible, you can expect to receive your credit before October 1, the deadline for full payments of school tax bills. New York State cannot provide a specific delivery date over the phone. You may receive your check or direct deposit before or after your neighbor or family member.

Note: If you are registered in the STAR exemption program, you will NOT receive a STAR check. Instead, your STAR benefit will appear as a discount on your 2026 School Tax Bill.
