Happy Birthday to John Fletcher Steele, born June 7, 1885. Fletcher was a landscape architect, most famous for his work with Mabel Choate in her Afternoon Garden and Blue Steps.

Fletcher wrote several books, innumerable articles, traveled, collected postcards, worked with the American Red Cross during World War I and eventually returned to live with his sister in Pittsford. Fletcher designed his own headstone and those of his family here in Mount Hope Cemetery.

“I want all my places to seem the homes of children and lovers. I want them to be comfortable and if possible slightly mysterious by day, with vistas and compositions appealing to the painter. I want them to be delirious in the moonlight....”

Such a lovely vision of home!
