The Monroe County (NY) Airport Fire Fighters Association was chartered as Local No. 1636 of the International Association of Fire Fighters on June 17, 1966. Our Union consisted of just 9 members at that time but has since grown to our current level of 21 members. As a union, we are responsible for negotiating an acceptable wages and benefits package for the Fire Fighters and Fire Captains of the G

reater Rochester International Airport Fire Department. We also work with the Airport Fire Chief and GRIA administration to ensure our members are provided with the appropriate working conditions, tools, and equipment to do their job as safely and efficiently as possible. As Airport Fire Fighters, our members are entrusted with the protection of those travelers, visitors and employees who utilize the Greater Rochester International Airport (ROC). This includes our primary duty of responding to aircraft incidents and accidents, along with structural responses, vehicle and machinery accidents, fuel and fluid spills, and emergency medical responses to all building and roadways on airport property. We also conduct periodic fire and safety inspections on airport buildings, fire protection systems, fueling facilities, and vehicles that are used for fueling the aircraft. Additionally, due to the specialized equipment we have on the airport, we have been requested to the scene of many of the larger incidents the area has seen including the fuel tanker fires on I-390 (1995) and W. (2003), and the train derailment in Charlotte (2001) to name a few. On December 24, 2012, our members responded mutual aid to the scene of a large fire and active shooter incident in West Webster. Four firefighters were ambushed and shot while responding to an early morning fire, two of them - Mike Chiapperini and Tomasz Kaczowka - fatally. While being escorted by a SWAT team, our members applied the first water to that fire and were able to slow the spread to other homes. Located just outside the city of Rochester, NY, the GRIA sees a passenger load of nearly 2,000,000 annually (departures and arrivals). In 2005, the total number of passengers using GRIA reached an all-time high of nearly 3 million passengers. The Monroe County Airport Professional Fire Fighters are employed by the County of Monroe and are members of the International Association of Fire Fighters, NY State Professional Fire Fighters Association, and Monroe County Professional Fire Fighters Association.

Some of our members made the best of this gorgeous day by joining the Rochester Fire Fighters Local 1071 for their annual golf tournament at the Ontario Golf Club. The proceeds of the event fund the Elvis Reyes Scholarship, which provides the children of firefighters opportunities to attend college and obtain a degree.

Yesterday evening, members of Local 1636 were at the Firematic apparatus demo showcasing the new Rescue 3 and spending time checking out the latest equipment and technology in the fire service.

Later in the evening, Rescue 8 responded mutual aid into Brockport for a reported aircraft emergency at the Ledgedale Airport. Upon arrival, crews learned the aircraft’s propeller had physically separated in flight, causing significant engine damage and covering the windshield with oil, severely obstructing the pilots’ vision.

The aircraft was occupied by a student pilot and flight instructor, who were able to safely land the plane without further incident.

Today we stand side by side, shoulder to shoulder, saluting the men and women who gave it all to protect our freedoms, our safety, and our ways of life. From the front lines of war to the streets in our cities, we pay our respects to those who sacrificed themselves in the line of duty, the ones we can never thank enough for their service to our nation, our communities, and the world. They will always be remembered.

May means our members are out training at the Public Safety Training Facility - PSTF in the SAFT! The Specialized Aircraft Fire Trainer allows us to practice scenarios with a combination of truck work and handlines, including spill, engine, baggage compartment, APU, and interior cabin fires.

Every year we're required to complete FAA mandatory live fire training, the SAFT being a major component. This year we utilized our new Rescue 3, mainly to train with the new apparatus, but also to practice with different hose loads in the crosslays to determine what will work best for aircraft fires (we'll give you a hint: we went with the triple layer load).

Two of our members traveled with the chief to Florida to conduct the final inspection of our new Rescue 2. The engine looks great, and we're eager to take delivery in the near future!

We extend our utmost gratitude to Firematic and Fire & Safety Services for assisting with the specifications and options for the apparatus, and Pierce Manufacturing for another precision build from their factory.
