Our What's up Wednesday features an article from the Star Tribune. Cuts to legal aid service programs would be devastating to Minnesotans. Please let your representatives know you support funding for legal services organizations.

LAOC's novel work preventing evictions and its unique partnership with the Rochester School System made national news this week!

The staff of the Rochester School District in southern Minnesota saw the impacts of evictions were trickling down to students.

"In a given 12-month period, 32% of the eviction cases involved school-aged children. That's an alarming statistic if you're looking at all the ripple effects on families and kids," said Karen Fairbairn Nath, the executive director of Legal Assistance of Olmsted County."

Read the full article to see how LAOC and the RPS system are working to keep families in stable housing.

The outcomes of the over seven million eviction cases filed each year can vary dramatically depending on where they occur. These four cities have created innovative initiatives to counteract the effect eviction filings can have on their residents.

Legal Assistance of Olmsted County (LAOC) is delighted and extremely grateful to have been a recipient of an unexpected $40,000 grant from Think Mutual Bank in partnership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines. This funding is especially critical to LAOC as it strives to meet the overwhelming demand for civil legal services in Olmsted County. Providing those most vulnerable, and in poverty, with a meaningful voice in the justice system ultimately defines the type of community that we live in. Thank you to Think Bank and FHLB Des Moines as this funding will allow LAOC to serve more individuals and families in need, making our Olmsted County community healthier, kinder and more just.
