Chris Deeney, Director of the University of Rochester's Laboratory for Laser Energetics, says it's the region's talent and industrial support that helps LLE attract roughly $120 million a year in federal funding, which wouldn't be possible without backing from the University of Rochester and New York State.

Now LLE is looking ahead. A new Genesis Mission Award will help the lab put AI tools to work on the massive datasets generated by its roughly 2,000 experiments a year, accelerating future scientific discovery.

From camera lenses to space telescope mirrors, 's optics legacy continues to launch innovations into orbit. 🚀

The Roman Space Telescope launched Sunday, and its optical telescope assembly, the eyes of the whole system, was designed, built, and tested right here by L3Harris Technologies. Once in orbit, Roman will collect 100 times more data per image than Hubble, gathering in three weeks what Hubble has collected in 35 years.

More than 1,000 employees worked on the project, and the technology developed for this mission is also finding its way into other areas of science, engineering, and optics like high-precision computer chips and cell phone components. Innovations created here continue to be felt everywhere.

Wendy Minotti and Peter Miller of L3Harris share more in this GRE Why ROC interview with News 8 WROC Rochester's Brennan Somers here: https://rochesterbiz.com/rochesters-l3harris-powers-the-nancy-grace-roman-space-telescope/
