May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month — a time to raise awareness about Lyme disease, recognize the symptoms, and promote tick bite prevention.

Tick season is here, and the risk of tick bites and Lyme disease increases during the spring, summer, and fall. Ticks can also remain active anytime temperatures are above freezing.

Lyme disease is spread through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Common symptoms may include:
• Fever
• Headache
• Fatigue
• A bullseye-shaped rash (erythema migrans)

If left untreated, Lyme disease can affect the joints, heart, and nervous system. Diagnosis is based on symptoms, physical findings, and possible exposure to infected ticks.

If you notice symptoms after a tick bite or spending time outdoors, contact your primary care provider.

The Healthy Pots, Healthy Homes community event will be held June 27, 2026, from 12:00-2:00 PM at the Foodlink Community Garden.

Community members are invited to bring old pots and pans to exchange for safer cookware while learning about lead exposure in cookware and toxins in soil. According to guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, some commonly used imported aluminum or brass cookware, including certain caldero-style pots, may leach lead into food during cooking. Even small amounts of lead can be harmful, especially for children and pregnant individuals.

The event will also feature:
• Food trucks for lunch
• $10 curbside market vouchers (while supplies last; SNAP/WIC accepted)
• Live cooking demonstrations with a nutrition educator
• Tips on safe cooking practices, identifying lead risks, and reducing soil contamination
• Free resources and education for the whole community

Everything is free and open to the community!
