Gloria Steinem, "The truth will set you free, but first it will p**s you off.”

We ALL need to pay closer attention to how covert sexism infiltrates both our personal lives and our government. We need to call out the systematic patriarchical control and demand equality.

It's easy to see examples of sexism in DC "quiet piggy", unfortunately inequality is also rampant here in our MN backyard.

Fact: Male Councilmember Palmer would call Councilmember Kirkpatrick and myself "his girls" instead of his Council or Legislative colleagues. Fact: Male Councilmember Keane would gaslight a female resident who spoke at City Hall, by calling her "just another crazy white lady." when she spoke.

It can even be heard on recorded City Council meetings former President Carlson being instructed how she "should vote" by whispers from a fellow male councilmember.
...and let's not forget the horrendously sexist comments/memes made against Mayor Kim Norton...many because of her gender..
Sadly this kind of sexist behavior and attacks are growing (attacks towards women by both women and men).

Those who are watching meetings and paying attention, you see the quiet control tactics and hidden sexism festering discrimination in Rochester.

It's important for everyone to ask, why exactly ARE there no women (at all) serving on our current Rochester City Council. All 7 legislators are affluent white men. Only men now making ALL the City laws, land ordinances, and tax policies. That needs to change.

It's hard being a women legislator. I was repeatedly asked as a councilmember to "just smile more" or told if I combed my hair better (more sexy), people would take me seriously. Question, has any of the male legislators been publicly attacked for their hairstyle or the rate of smiling?

The difference between being labeled as "aggressive" verses "assertive," is often only your gender. Stigmas and double standards are real and have devistating consequences.

So, please....we desperately need MORE "Gloria" changemakers. Her death yesterday (9-2-26) has left a feminist void that EVERY gender has a responsibility to help fill.

Rochester we can, and need to do better.

Shame on those who place power before the needs and well being of people.

One of many residents who spoke, a youth last night pleaded, "please listen to your community..." do not "strip a joy from Rochester."

As a former councilmember, I constantly amplified voices and protected the decisions of the people (including boards and commissions). I have also sadly witnessed the gradual erosion of democracy in our local government.
Watch the link below to hear the pleas and sadly see the city council overturned our Historical Preservation Commission's decision, now allowing the destruction of Rochester's history.
It is a job of an elected representative to represent people not greed. This Council robbed future generations of the ability to connect to their history, something that can never be replaced.

Congratulations to all who won the primary and a huge thank you to the amazing candidates who put their name on the ballot. You are all my heros.
If you haven't run for office, you have no idea how excruciating it is, how much courage, time, and sacrifice is involved.

To the amazing 615 people who came out and voted for me, thank you. I feel blessed beyond words and I am deeply humbled and honored by each of you. Thank you ❤️

Factoring in financial logic, ethics, and basic Democracy common sense, Rank Choice Voting is best for our city, state, and nation. Unfortunately a huge reason why it hasn't happen, is multi-million dollar candidates and lobbyists then lose their leverage. Money is powerful.
Primary's are just expensive popularity contests (look up the stats on demographics). Even with no money, a tiny campaign team, and an orchastrated smear campaign against me...615 people voted in the middle of summer for transparency, thank you.

Reguardless of who you cast your ballot for, thank you to ALL those who voted in the primary. Voters are the true patriotic Americans (and only ones who can justify being able to complain about government), thank you.

Abelism, Sexism, and Classism are dangerous and real (as a low-income autistic female I know). Racism and homophobia are also real and dangerous. Even though I am not a fan of the discriminating multi-million dollar political lobbyist groups influencing our election and violating our Charter... I also know we can not afford to play politics with candidates in November. There is too much at stake.

Even if you do not like Jess (or the lobbyists/politicians who endorsed her), PLEASE vote for Dr. Jess Garcia for Mayor on November 3rd. Being a good citizen is voting for who is best for Rochester, not nessarily who you like most.

Luckily I think Jess is a truly amazing person. We have hung out many times when we were elected officials together and I consider her a friend. Jess is compassionate, smart, makes hard decisions, and puts the needs of people first. I am proud to get behind her campaign.

Please get involved. 2026 early voting starts September 15th. As you send your kids off to school this year, please start campaigning for a former school board member who NEEDS to be our next mayor.
Rochester needs a Mayor who can do their job (i.e. a mayor can not ethically be involved with any buisness he or his family has financial deals with: i.e. Mayo Clinic, hospitality, developers etc) We need a Mayor without conflict of interests who will put the residents first.

Please get involved and vote Jess this fall. Rochester's future depends on it.
