Last week was full of outdoor exploration and hands-on learning at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge!

5th-grade students from multiple schools joined us for Spring Environmental Education Days, featuring aquatic insect, bird hikes, tree planting, and nature journaling. From exploring Tamarac Lake to discovering birds along the trails, students connected with nature in meaningful ways.

A huge thank you to our amazing Friends of Tamarac volunteers who help make these experiences possible!

We are always looking for additional Environmental Education volunteers to help lead or assist with activities for students from preschool through high school. Training and materials are provided. Most opportunities take place on weekdays during spring, fall, and winter.

To support this program and other wonderful activities at the refuge, consider becoming a member today — it truly makes all the difference.

Please help plant trees this week!
We are teaching youth the importance of stewardship for our natural resources and planting trees for a habitat project. We are short on volunteers to be planting mentors for the students. If you would like to spend a beautiful day in nature with curious kids, please call Education Coordinator Donna Kent (218-396-9045). No experience necessary, we will provide the orientation, and you will be paired with 2-3 students to help them follow the tree planting instructions. Planting days are on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9am - 2pm - come for some or all of the tree planting times. Leave a legacy at Tamarac Refuge as you help build a forest!

The Friends of Tamarac Spring EE season at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is officially underway! 🌱

We had an amazing time welcoming 3rd grade students out to explore, learn, and connect with nature. Students practiced bird and frog calls, used binoculars to spot and identify birds, discovered plants, used compasses to navigate, and experienced the challenges of migration through active play. They also slowed down to observe the world around them—using all five senses to journal just like naturalists.

These hands-on experiences helped bring classroom learning to life in a meaningful and memorable way.

A huge thank you to our incredible volunteers and partners who made this day possible. Because of you, students didn’t just visit Tamarac… they experienced it. 💚

Refuge staff meet regularly with White Earth Nation Natural Resources Department staff to collaborate on conservation projects. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Midwest Region recently negotiated a multi-year funding agreement with the White Earth Nation related to programs at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. The agreement identifies specific duties that tribal staff will perform in collaboration with refuge staff until the end of fiscal year 2028. The agreement will go into effect on July 1, 2026.
