Tonight Robins Fire EMTs and Paramedics participated in cutting edge simulations utilizing the Simulation in Motion-IA mobile skills lab. This grant funded training allows our crews to experience critical patients in a controlled setting and practice interventions to assure our EMTs and Paramedics have the sharpest skill sets.

Tonight our crews trained on sprinkler access, parts, control, and standpipes in classroom and on Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau prop as well as our own open sprinkler prop. Sprinklers can be shut down in the control room but might have water left in the system for some time that has yet to work through the plumbing. Controlling open sprinklers can reduce damage and water weight accumulation on the structure. Our firefighters are always training on skills to be ready no matter what we face.

Tonight two of our rookies…firefighter candidates…Mitch Mundorf and Gavin Black were installed as full firefighters onto our department marking the successful completion of their candidate year. These two completed their training and testing requirements and take their places alongside their peers as firefighters with Robins fire. Our candidates complete internal onboarding and external training and certification to the firefighter 1 level or EMT before testing out of candidacy. Tonight their hard work to this milestone was recognized by receiving their personal helmet fronts and being pinned by their loved ones. The pinning of the badge is a proud tradition. During the ceremony, a loved one or commanding officer places the badge or pin directly onto the uniform to celebrate a graduation, promotion, or commitment to service. It symbolizes family support, community pride, and the weight of the responsibility the individual is taking on. Welcome to RFD firefighters Mitch and Gavin.

At 1802 hours This city of Robins fire department was summoned to a motor vehicle vs motorcycle collision in the 800 block of Mentzer road in Robins. At 1804 our crews were on scene and providing care. At the time of call Lifeguard air ambulance was placed on an in air stand by, but was quickly disregarded by our on scene ALS providers who determined the patient was not critical and was stable. The operator of the motorcycle was transported by ground ambulance to the hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation by our law enforcement partners. Thank you to Robins Police Department, Area Ambulance Service, St. Luke's LifeGuard Air Ambulance, Linn County Deputies' and Dispatchers' Association and Cedar Rapids Fire Department, Cedar Rapids Police Department, and Iowa State Patrol for the quick responses and being teams we can count on.

Today Robins Fire Captain/EMS director attended a table top emergency planning exercise at the Linn County Emergency Operations Center for local healthcare organizations to discuss disaster planning with local emergency experts and leaders. 32 organizations participated.

Our technical rescue specialists practicing rapid descent and control techniques to access trapped/suspended patients. This is one phase of a rescue scenario where a victim might be trapped in an inaccessible by other means position. Our crews practice these skills regularly to assure we can solve complex rescue situations effectively and safely.

Thanks to New Covenant Church for the use of their parking lot to run our staff through a 100 cone VFIS NFPA vehicle control course. This practical along with classroom education meets the state of Iowa requirement for annual driver safety. Our entire staff must be able to operate and control these vehicles safely as we are responsible for our safety and also everyone else’s. Your firefighters take this responsibility seriously and hold to the highest standards
