Lynn grew up around farms in Iowa with his family. His father passed away when he was young. When Lynn was in his 20s, his mother was no longer able to care for him because his aggression became too much for her to handle on her own.

He was moved into a facility in Story County, Iowa. He continued to display some aggressive behaviors that were very challenging, and the facility was unable to care for him the way that he needed.

In 1995, he was sent to Balance Autism, in Pleasant Hill, Iowa. When founded as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization in 1994, it was named The Homestead because its earliest program focused on a working farm where adults with autism could live and work, raising fruits and vegetables.

Lynn loved being part of the vocational program on the farm for many years.

Now in his 70s, he has “retired” from the program.

He transferred from campus based living (the farm) which was more intensive care, to a home and community based living situation (group home) which is less restrictive for him.

Lynn is verbal, but it’s mainly one or two-word phrases. He will also point or lead staff to what he wants.

He needs help with hygiene tasks, and other aspects of daily living.

He has 24/7 staff in his home and he goes grocery shopping once a week, they help him with cooking skills, and chores like emptying the dishwasher.

He decreased his aggression to virtually nothing. Staff members say he is very laid back, easy-going and friendly.
