I’m not saying the other bartenders won’t make good drinks. I’m just here to tell you they won’t be makin’ a Hackenmueller’s bacon old-fashioned. Come on down to Wicked Wort Brewing Co. on Saturday and support the Robbinsdale Lions. If you’re looking for what I got, 4pm to 5pm is your slot.

That's odd, I thought it would be big news. There seems to be an absence of a certain ornithological piece. A head line regarding the mass awareness of a certain avian variety. Have you not heard? It was my understanding that everyone had heard. Oh..there it is….

We bet you've heard the iconic 1963 hit "Surfin' Bird" by The Trashmen. These rockers, who formed in 1962, hail from Robbinsdale, a town bursting with famous Minnesotans like wrestling legend Vern Gagne and award-winning baker Marjorie Johnson. Minnesota Live's photojournalist Bill Middeke takes us....

Today we honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose work transformed our nation, not through violence, but through the moral force of nonviolent resistance. He taught us that real change comes through peaceful protest, through speaking truth with courage, and through appealing to our shared humanity even in our most divided moments.

We've made tremendous progress since Dr. King's time, yet his work reminds us that progress requires each generation to actively uphold the values of justice, dignity, and equal treatment under law.

These past few weeks, our community has experienced significant unrest. People are afraid. People are angry. These feelings are real and valid. But I ask you to remember Dr. King's words: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

Whatever our views on current events, we can agree that every person deserves to be treated with dignity. We can agree that violence and chaos do not make our community safer. And we can agree that the path forward must be grounded in our shared values, not in actions that tear our community apart.

Dr. King faced far greater threats than most of us will ever know, yet he never wavered in his commitment to nonviolent resistance. He showed us that peaceful protest is not weakness, it is strength.

Dr. King's dream was of a beloved community. Let's honor his memory by building that community right here in Robbinsdale; with courage, with compassion, and with peace.

Dear Robbinsdale Residents,

Yesterday's incident involving an ICE agent and resulting in the tragic loss of life has understandably stirred strong emotions in our community and beyond. While many are seeking immediate answers and explanations, and I realize the video evidence is compelling, it is crucial that we allow the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation before drawing conclusions.

The legal process exists to establish facts and ensure accountability. We must trust this process to work as intended. This is a time for our community to demonstrate restraint and patience as the investigation proceeds. I respect your (our) right to peacefully protest, anything more will only make matters worse.

To our immigrant residents: The Robbinsdale Police Department has reaffirmed that local law enforcement's role is not to enforce federal immigration law. RPD does not inquire about immigration status, nor is it their policy to do so in any situation. Every resident of Robbinsdale should feel safe in our community and comfortable contacting the city or calling 911 when help is needed. Your safety and wellbeing remain our priority.

During this difficult time, I ask all residents to focus on what we can control; how we treat one another, how we support our neighbors, and how we maintain the unity that makes Robbinsdale strong. We are one community, and we should navigate this challenging moment together with dignity and respect for all.

Thank you for your patience and for your commitment to keeping Robbinsdale a welcoming and safe community for all who call it home.

Today, on Veterans Day, we pause to honor all who have served our nation in uniform. To the veterans of Robbinsdale, thank you!

Your service, sacrifice, and commitment to something greater than yourselves have helped preserve the freedoms we cherish.

Veterans Day reminds us that the security and liberties we often take for granted come at a cost, borne by those willing to serve. Whether you served in wartime or peacetime, at home or abroad, your contribution matters deeply to our community and our country.

I also want to recognize recent Robbinsdale graduates who have joined the military or been appointed to service academies. You represent the next generation answering the call to serve, and our community is proud of you.

To all veterans (past, present, and future) Robbinsdale is grateful and I am deeply grateful. Thank you for your service.

Robbinsdale has lost a legend. With heavy hearts, we say goodbye to Marjorie Johnson, who passed away at the remarkable age of 106.

Marjorie wasn’t just Robbinsdale’s “Blue Ribbon Baker”, she was a beloved neighbor, a source of inspiration, and a shining example of the joy and generosity that define our community since she moved here in 1968. Her endless energy, warmth, and talent in the kitchen brought smiles to so many faces, both here at home and across the nation.

On behalf of the City of Robbinsdale, I offer my deepest condolences to Marjorie’s family and friends. Her legacy will live on in the memories of everyone she touched and in the recipes she so joyfully shared. Personally, I will always remember the amazing ginger snaps she brought to a National Night Out party shortly after we moved in. As well as her infectious enthusiasm and kindness.

Let’s celebrate her remarkable life and the indelible mark she left on our city.

Rest in peace, Marjorie. Thank you for everything.
