Representatives from Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare's Co-Response Program recently attended the 7th Annual National Co-Responder Conference (CoRCon 2026) in Dallas, Texas.

Attending the conference were Roanoke Police Department Lieutenant Ronald Robinson, City of Roanoke 911 Operations Administrator Traci Shelton, and Co-Response Crisis Clinicians Taylor Thompson and Hope Keffer.

The National Co-Responder Conference brings together public safety professionals, behavioral health experts, crisis clinicians, and program leaders from across the country to share best practices, innovative approaches, and emerging trends in crisis response and behavioral health partnerships.

Throughout the conference, attendees participated in educational sessions, keynote presentations, and networking opportunities focused on strengthening collaborative responses to individuals experiencing mental health, substance use, and behavioral health crises.

This conference also provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress being made here in Roanoke. Under the leadership and direction of Mandy Lee, Director of Marcus Alert and Crisis Intervention Team Services, our agencies have worked collaboratively to build and strengthen partnerships that ensure citizens have access to the resources and services that best meet their individual needs. Whether that response involves law enforcement, behavioral health services, crisis intervention, or community-based support, our shared goal remains connecting individuals with the right help at the right time.

The knowledge and ideas gained through this conference will help support and enhance our ongoing efforts to provide compassionate, effective, and community-focused crisis intervention services throughout the Roanoke Valley.

Thank you to the International Co-Responder Alliance for hosting another outstanding conference and providing an opportunity to learn from programs across the nation.

A sincere thank you to Dru Clark for spending the past two days at our center providing outstanding training on a variety of important topics, ranging from NextGen Culture to Trainer Liability, and Implicit Bias in 911.

We were proud to host this free training opportunity and especially appreciated the chance to welcome dispatchers from neighboring jurisdictions to learn alongside our team. Opportunities like these strengthen our profession, encourage collaboration, and help us continue providing the highest level of service to our communities.

Thank you, Dru, for sharing your knowledge, experience, and passion with all of us. We appreciate the time and effort you invested in making these sessions both informative and engaging.

Some days in dispatch are harder than others, and today was one of those days.

Behind every headset is a person carrying the weight of difficult calls, critical incidents, and the responsibility of being a calm voice during someone's worst moment. While the public may never hear everything that happens on our side of the radio, days like today remind us just how important it is to support one another.

That's why we're especially grateful for Shield Chap and Moose stopping by to check on our team. Their visit brought smiles, comfort, encouragement, and a much-needed reminder that we are not alone.

Thank you for taking the time to support our dispatchers and for recognizing the emotional challenges that come with this profession. Your kindness made a difference today.

UPDATE 12:50 p.m.: The body of a 15-year-old boy has been recovered from the river. Preliminarily, this appears to have been an accidental drowning.

First responders from the Roanoke Police Department and the Roanoke FireEMS Department are currently searching for a missing teenage swimmer at Piedmont Park. Multiple resources from neighboring jurisdictions are en route. Expect a heavy first responder presence in and around the river as the search continues. The initial call came in at 10:39 a.m.
