🚧Upcoming Waterline Replacement Projects in SW Roanoke City 💧

The Western Virginia Water Authority has three upcoming waterline construction projects happening on Alberta Avenue SW, Carter Road SW, and Lofton Road SW.

These projects are anticipated to begin construction this month and will be completed this winter. The construction is being done in advance of Roanoke City paving for this area.

Want to learn more about the Water Authority?💧 Apply to participate in our upcoming Citizens Academy. Applications close this Friday, Sept. 11!

Citizens Academy is a free, 5-week program that invites Authority customers and community leaders behind the scenes of the utility that delivers drinking water, treats wastewater, and protects public health and local waterways for approximately 70,000 accounts across Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Franklin County, Botetourt County, the Town of Vinton, and the Town of Boones Mill. This program is for adults 18 and older.

Sessions are held on Tuesday evening from 5:30-8:00 PM (dinner provided) beginning Sept 22.

🤔 Q: It's been raining. Are we still under voluntary water conservation?
A: Yes, we are still asking customers to voluntarily reduce their water consumption. Even with recent rains, our region is still experiencing a drought. The Drought Plan is based on reservoir levels at Carvins Cove during a particular month of the year, which is approaching 19 feet below full pond in September.

💧Q: When would mandatory restrictions begin?
A: Based on the current reservoir level, the reservoir would need to be 26 feet low in late fall before mandatory water restrictions would begin.

🌧️ Q: When will the reservoir fill back up?
A: While we can't predict when it will rain, we do know that the reservoir typically refills in late fall to early spring. Filling the reservoir depends on the amount of rain we get, the location of the rainfall, and the time of year. When the leaves fall off the trees and the trees in the watershed are dormant, we get more runoff from the watershed to help fill the reservoir.

The Roanoke Regional Water Pollution Control Plant began operations in 1951. The plant provides tertiary treatment for around 32-million gallons of sanitary sewer a day from all jurisdictions in the Roanoke Valley.

Although the plant is rated for 55-million gallons/day of treatment, wet weather events can increase the volume of flow received at the plant. On a peak day, over 146 million gallons of flow has been successfully treated.

The plant has grown in size and today removes more than 107,000 lbs of pollution per day. More than 3,000 lab tests are conducted every month to verify that the liquid treatment process is meeting or exceeding some of the most stringent water quality standards of any plant in Virginia.
