LABOR DAY CLOSURE NOTICE

In observance of Labor Day, the Roanoke City Sheriff’s Office administrative offices and the Oliver W. Hill Justice Center (Courthouse) will be closed on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Normal business hours and services will resume on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Labor Day and thank the hardworking men and women throughout our community for the contributions they make each day.

Please note: This closure does not impact the Sheriff’s Office’s essential public safety and detention operations.

**VDOT Safety Tips**

Here are some tips for safely navigating the roadways during the holiday weekend:

*Buckle up every time and ensure passengers and car seats are secured.
*Be patient and follow the posted speed limit and consider leaving early to allow extra time to reach your destination.
*Put your phone down and don’t drive distracted.
*Identify rest areas in advance and take a break to avoid drowsy driving.
*If an outdoor recreation site is full, never park along road shoulders, as this is not safe for those on the roadway, including emergency response vehicles.
*Use caution as more pedestrians and cyclists are outdoors taking advantage of warm weather.
*Obey the “Move Over” law, requiring motorists to move over one lane, if possible, for all vehicles with flashing lights, flares, or warning signs stopped on the side of the road. If drivers are unable to move over, they should reduce their speed and use caution.

**Please don't let your last summer hooray turn deadly - If you plan to drink,
have a designated driver**.

In Memoriam: Sheriff Steve Draper

The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office joins our law enforcement family across Virginia in mourning the loss of Sheriff Steve Draper, Sheriff of the City of Martinsville and Chairman of the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC).

Sheriff Draper dedicated his life and career to serving the citizens of Virginia with honor, integrity, and unwavering commitment. Throughout his distinguished service, he championed professionalism, accountability, and excellence in law enforcement, leaving a lasting impact on countless agencies, officers, and communities throughout the Commonwealth.

As Chairman of VLEPSC, Sheriff Draper provided steady leadership and played a vital role in strengthening the standards and practices that support excellence in Virginia law enforcement. His dedication to public service and his passion for advancing the profession will be remembered by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Sheriff Draper's family, friends, colleagues, and the members of the Martinsville Sheriff's Office during this difficult time.

We honor his life, his service, and the legacy he leaves behind.

Rest in peace, Sheriff Draper. Your dedication to the people of Virginia and the law enforcement profession will never be forgotten.
