Trash and recycling are picked up on an alternate schedule this week due to Labor Day!

City offices are closed Monday, September 7, for Labor Day. Trash and A-Week recycling are delayed by one day:
- Monday routes: Collected Tuesday, September 8
- Tuesday routes: Collected Wednesday, September 9
- Wednesday routes: Collected Thursday, September 10
- Thursday routes: Collected Friday, September 11

The Wasena Bridge Replacement project is nearing completion! Crews are reinforcing retaining walls with tie-back anchors and working on the parapet walls, sidewalks, ADA ramps and storm drains.

Throughout the month of September, crews will also be constructing a roundabout on the Old Southwest side of the bridge.

Poetry lovers packed the Main Library community room as Roanoke Public Libraries hosted U.S. Poet Laureate Arthur Sze for a reading and discussion. The New Mexico-based poet shared insights about his creative process and how spending time at Hollins University at the edge of our City, inspired him to include Roanoke in his poem “At the Equinox.”

📣 Traffic Alert: Walnut Avenue Bridge

Repair work on the Walnut Avenue Bridge will block one lane of traffic over a four-week period beginning September 14.

From 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., one lane of bridge traffic will remain open. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time when possible.

Steel plates will be used periodically, with signs posted to alert drivers to bumps in the roadway. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians should use caution when traveling through the work zone and remain alert for crews and equipment.
