At 3:55PM, crews on B-Shift were dispatched by the E-911 Center to reports of a duplex on fire in the 2600 block of Dorchester Drive NW. Initial reports indicated there was a patient in the front yard with critical injuries that self-extricated themselves from the home.

While enroute to the fire, our team on Engine 3 reported visible smoke in the area and the call was upgraded to a working fire response adding additional resources. At 3:57PM, Engine 3 arrived and advised there was a residential structure with heavy fire showing and a partial structural collapse with a victim outside. The call was upgraded to a 2 Alarm Fire response.

Firefighters and Medics quickly went to work extinguishing the flames and providing medical care and transport to a local hospital for one patient. Due to the structural collapse, downed wires, and continued explosions from the home, our team initiated a defensive attack. The fire was quickly knocked down.

Five people have been displaced. One patient was transported with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time. Updates will be posted as they are available.

From fighting fires across the city to mentoring the next generation of firefighters, JJ leaves behind a legacy of leadership, innovation, and dedication to his crews and community.

JJ has witnessed decades of change in the fire service, from learning streets and hydrants before GPS to helping improve firefighter safety through the turnout gear committee and advancements in EMS care.

When asked what he’ll miss most, his answer was simple: “The guys for sure.”

Thank you, Captain Price, for 34 years of service, mentorship, and commitment to the people of Roanoke. Enjoy your well-earned retirement!

🚒 Lt. Fire Marshal Priest and PIO Escobar had a great time visiting the after school program at Garden City Elementary School to talk with students about fire safety and the gear firefighters use everyday.

🚨 During our visit, we discussed safe charging practices for devices, what to do if there is a fire, and reminded students that firefighters are friends even when we look a little different in our gear. Building these positive connections helps kids feel more comfortable and confident during emergencies.

Thank you to Garden City Elementary School for inviting us to spend the evening with your students!
