Today, the Roanoke Police Department joins communities across our nation in solemn remembrance of the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.
Twenty-five years have passed, but the courage, sacrifice, and loss of that day remain deeply felt.
We remember the nearly 3,000 lives taken far too soon. We remember the families who never again welcomed their loved ones home. And we remember the law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and countless other first responders who ran toward danger without knowing what awaited them.
For those of us who wear the badge, September 11th carries a profound meaning. The officers who answered the call that morning demonstrated the very heart of our profession: courage in the face of fear, service before self, and an unwavering commitment to protect others — even at the greatest possible cost.
Here at Roanoke PD, we honor their legacy by remembering not only how they died, but how they lived and served. Their sacrifice reminds each of us of the responsibility that comes with wearing the uniform and of the promise we make to our community every time we answer the call.
A quarter-century later, may we also remember the unity, compassion, and strength Americans showed one another in the days that followed.
To the fallen, their families, our fellow first responders, and all whose lives were forever changed by September 11th: we remember you. We honor you. We will never forget.
