The Stormwater Utility was created to address water quality in the City of Roanoke. The city is mandated via federal and state agencies to control and eliminate stormwater pollution. Like many rivers across the country, the health of the Roanoke River is impaired from pollution. Stormwater runoff contributes to this pollution from normal activities taking place around the city. Everyday activities

such as walking the dog, fertilizing the lawn, driving cars and exposing bare soil can generate pollution. These pollutants wash into the storm drain system and flow untreated into the nearest creek, ultimately reaching the Roanoke River. The resulting pollution reduces our community's ability to use our waterways for swimming, fishing, and drinking, and it adversely impacts wildlife populations. These problems create negative impacts on our community by reducing livability, suppressing the local economy, and increasing the cost of using our water as a natural resource. It is our goal to work together with citizens to improve the City of Roanoke's waterways so that they can be community assets for many years to come. Important Notices:

The Mud Lick watershed encapsulates 4.2 miles of perennial stream in the southeast portion of the City of Roanoke. Mud Lick is one of 13 major waterbodies within the City of Roanoke and is an important feature of our local environment. Enjoy this highlight of Mud Lick and look out for highlights of other watersheds in the City!

Did you know that grass clippings are considered stormwater pollution? 🤔

Grass clippings clog storm drains, fill catch basins and create flooding during rain events, and can affect our rivers and streams too. The increase in nutrients in these systems can cause algae growth and can provide a breeding ground for bacteria and pests.

So, what can you do to prevent this pollution?

1. Sweep or blow all grass clippings onto your lawn
2. Use grass clippings as garden mulch
3. Bag and dispose of grass clippings with other yard waste

Keep grass out of the stormdrains and help us to create a Clean Water Legacy!

🚧Kirk Ave. Drainage Improvement Project Update 🚧

This project is part of a greater effort to reduce downtown flooding by upgrading the stormwater drainage system so it can handle more water volume. This part of the project is focused on constructing a storm drainage project Downtown along Kirk Ave. SE between Jefferson St. SE and Market St. SE (see project area in the post). This project includes upsizing two existing storm drainage inlets and adding one new storm drainage inlet, with the goal to reduce flood risk in the area.

Expect periodic roadway, sidewalk, and parking detours and temporary closures throughout this area. The City is working with local business owners to minimize disruption as much as possible. We appreciate your patience with traffic and noise disruptions as we complete this important project that will protect life and property downtown.

Stay tuned to our socials for updates on this project!

🚧Ore Branch Stream Restoration update🚧

The Ore Branch Stream Restoration is now well underway! This project started in April and will run through fall of this year with goals of reducing flood risk in the area, improving the water quality of Ore Branch, and reconnecting Ore Branch to its floodplain. The ~10 ft. tall block walls confining the channel have been removed, and excavation of the floodplain has started on the Franklin Rd. side of the project. The removal of the old masonry block channel is the first step in the process of allowing the stream to flow more naturally and will allow floodwaters to fill the floodplain rather than impacting nearby infrastructure. Additionally, the stream banks around the bridge have been reinforced and reconfigured to allow the stream to safely navigate under the bridge without causing erosion.

Please be mindful of construction traffic and work zones along Franklin Rd. and the Roanoke River Greenway. This project is funded by DCR’s Community Flood Preparedness Fund (CFPF).

Stay tuned to our socials for updates on this project!

Rooted in Service. Powered by Community.👷🏗️

It’s National Public Works Week, and we want to give a huge shoutout to our City of Roanoke Public Works Division! This year’s theme “rooted in service, powered by community” acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works. It’s what has propelled public works innovations that have helped our community evolve into a place where people can live, learn, work, and play in a safe and clean environment.

Some of that work is highly visible like building bridges or repairing roads, while other work is sometimes hidden from view like fleet services, water quality sampling, or outreach program management. All of the effort that goes into public works services form the foundation of our community, and reminds us that every project, seen or unseen, powers the connection between service and the people of the City of Roanoke.

Let it flow. Protect the natural floodplain. 🌿

When oil, pesticides, litter, or other debris are dumped in the street or into ditches, it ends up in the Roanoke River and its tributaries via our stormdrain network. Our natural aquatic resources moderate flooding, create habitat, and are important cultural and recreational focal points of our area. Help us protect the natural environment by disposing of waste properly and keeping streets and stormdrains clear. Dispose of household waste at the Tinker Creek Transfer Station or contact the City of Roanoke Solid Waste Department with any concerns related to your household waste collection or observed dumping/large amounts of litter.

Let’s keep our streams clean. If you see illicit discharges, report them: City of Roanoke 540-853-5900; Roanoke County 540-772-2065; Town of Vinton 540-983-0646; and City of Salem 540-375-3032.
