After 42 years with Roanoke FireEMS, Captain Kenny Furrow has officially hung up his boots and begun a well-earned retirement.

His service to the City of Roanoke spans an incredible 47 years, beginning in 1979 when he started running EMS as a 16-year-old EMT with the Williamson Road Life Saving Crew. In 1984, he joined what was then the Roanoke Fire Department, dedicating the next four decades to serving and protecting our community.

While his shifts may be over, the legacy he leaves behind will continue to be felt throughout Roanoke Fire-EMS for years to come.

Congratulations on your retirement, and thank you for 47 years of service to the City of Roanoke, Virginia.

Yesterday, members of the Roanoke Firefighters Association stood alongside educators, public employees, labor advocates, and community leaders at the Roanoke Municipal Building to support collective bargaining rights for public servants.

While collective bargaining legislation was recently vetoed at the state level, local governments still have the authority to work with public employees on collective bargaining policies. That’s why these conversations matter.

Firefighters, teachers, and other public servants deserve a voice in the decisions that affect their workplaces, their families, and the services they provide to our community every day.

We appreciate everyone who joined us in advocating for the men and women who keep Roanoke safe, educated, and moving forward.

After 27 years of service to Roanoke Fire-EMS, 1st Lt. Kevin Bradbury “Broadway” hung up his gear and is now enjoying retired life.

His love and dedication to this job and the people around him have left a lasting mark on the department and those fortunate enough to serve beside him.

And while Broadway may be retired, we have a feeling we’ll still be seeing plenty of him around the station checking in on his son, Brayden — continuing a family legacy that has lasted generations.

Brothers and Sisters, we will continue to fight for the rights of Fire Fighters with those who work with us, regardless of political affiliation.

Pay, benefits and working conditions for Fire-EMS workers should be negotiated, improved and financed. We will tirelessly pursue these goals despite the Governors decision.

Today, the Governor of Virginia turned her back on Virginia firefighters and public sector workers across the Commonwealth.

"Virginia’s firefighters will continue running into danger, saving lives and making a difference every single day in this Commonwealth. Virginians trust their firefighters will show up when they are needed most. Unfortunately, now firefighters know they cannot trust their Governor to show up for them."
