At approximately 7:04 P.M. on September 5, 2026, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue units responded to the 3100 block of Carvins Cove Road for reports of a camper fire.

First responding units from Masons Cove reported smoke rising in the air upon arrival and upgraded the incident to a working fire.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters discovered a camper engulfed in flames. Crews were able to knock down the fire in approximately five minutes.

There were no injuries and no displacements reported because of this incident. The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office reported that the failure of an electrical part in the camper caused the fire. The estimated loss is $30,000. The fire did not extend or cause damage to the home.

After 25 years of dedicated service, Battalion Chief Chad Wheeler has announced his retirement from Roanoke County Fire and Rescue.

Over the course of his career, Chad has made significant contributions to our department, our personnel, and the citizens we serve, specifically with our recruit academies at the Roanoke Valley Regional Fire and EMS Training Center. We thank him for his dedication and leadership and wish him and his family all the best in retirement!

UPDATE: According to the Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire was caused by unattended cooking. All pets escaped safely and all have been accounted for. Three people were transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and one patient was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center for further evaluation. Damage estimates are $225,000.

At approximately 1:37 A.M. on September 1, 2026, Roanoke County Fire and Rescue responded to the 10400 block of Fortune Ridge Road on Bent Mountain for reports of a residential structure fire.

First responding units from Back Creek reported that the front of the house was fully involved upon arrival and confirmed it as a working fire. Crews were able to knock down the fire in approximately 45 minutes.

Three patients were transported by ambulance to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and one of those patients was later flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center for further evaluation.

Six people, one dog, and one cat will be displaced due to the fire and are receiving aid from the American Red Cross. Unfortunately, one cat is still unaccounted for.

Thank you to Floyd County EMS for assisting on scene. The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office is currently on scene to investigate and provide a damage estimate.

Roanoke County Fire and Rescue is proud to announce Wheel of Wellness, a FREE fall seminar focused on first responder wellness on October 19th and 20th, 2026. This event will be open to all first responders, their families, and the general public.

We have great content planned and speakers lined up to present topics on first responder mental health, financial education, and physical wellness. The event will last from 08:00-16:30 both days.

The exact same content and agenda will be presented on both days to accommodate all shift schedules! 🔥
