As this year’s legislative session comes to a close, I am proud to announce that 10 of my bills are headed to the Governor’s desk!
From protecting our voting rights to advancing government accountability and supporting communities across California, these bills reflect a continued commitment to delivering meaningful policy.

Senate Bill 891 – Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Justice Program
Senate Bill 1117 – Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Fee Reform
Senate Bill 1151 – Infant Formula Tax Exemption
Senate Bills 1164 & 1360 – California Voting Rights Act of 2026
Senate Bill 1328 – LGBTQ Liaisons at Higher Education Satellite Campuses
Senate Bill 1367 – Prohibiting Zoning for Detention Purposes
Senate Bill 1379 – Separating Riverside County Sheriff and Coroner
Senate Bill 1381 – CDE/School for the Deaf Notification
Senate Bill 1418 – Preserving Chain of Custody Over Election Records

Additionally, two of my bills have already been signed into law by Governor Newsom:

Senate Bill 73 – Elections, signed on May 27, 2026.
Senate Bill 928 – Protecting California State University Employees from AI Encroachment

I am incredibly proud of what has been accomplished this legislative session and remain committed to fighting for policies that protect our rights, strengthen our communities, and deliver meaningful progress for Californians.

SB 1379 – Separating the Riverside County Sheriff and Coroner is headed to the Governor’s Desk!
SB1379 would require Riverside County to separate the offices of Sheriff and Coroner and establish an independent medical examiner by July 1, 2027. The bill would also strengthen transparency by requiring the County to publicly post information regarding in-custody deaths in county jails within specified timeframes.

Senate Bill 1379 is needed specifically for Riverside County because its jails have been recognized by the national press as among the deadliest in the country, with a disproportionate of in-custody deaths among Latinos and young people; the County abdicated its responsibility to address this crisis and make these reforms under the cover of a deeply flawed 2024 internal audit that has been criticized by researchers at UC; and Riverside County taxpayers have had to foot the bill for nearly $100 million in settlements.

SB 1367 – Prohibiting Zoning for Detention Purposes is headed to the Governor’s Desk!
SB 1367 would prohibit cities and counties from approving new land uses that authorize the construction of detention facilities or changes in land use that allow existing buildings to be converted into detention facilities.

SB 1117 – Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Fee Reform is headed to the Governor’s Desk!
SB1117 would reform how certain fees are calculated for accessory dwelling units (ADUs). Under the bill, fees for qualifying ADUs would be based only on the portion of interior livable space exceeding 750 square feet. This legislation will help create a fairer approach to ADU fees and support efforts to expand housing opportunities across California.

Students learn best from human educators. AI can be a helpful tool, but it should never replace the people who educate and support our students.

Thank you to Governor Gavin Newsom for signing SB 928 into law and helping us protect California’s students and educators!
