Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District Learn about RCRCD’s programs and the LandUse Learning Center with 3-acres sustainability information

The Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District (RCRCD) works with private land users, nonprofit organizations, and public entities to facilitate the conservation of natural resources within its boundaries. RCRCD provides information about resource stewardship and management for each land use: native habitats, urban/suburban areas, and agriculture. RCRCD conducts education programs and on-the-

land conservation projects, such as habitat restoration. Areas of focus include water conservation, erosion control, storm water quality, habitat and native species restoration, conservation education, and more. RCRCD is an independent, special district enabled under Division 9 of the California Public Resources Code. As defined in Division 9, Resource Conservation Districts are given broad abilities to help sustain natural resources. The District is governed by a locally appointed five member Board of Directors.

Get to know the rare and endemic Orocopia sage in a presentation by Melanie Davis of the UC Riverside Center for Conservation Biology. Orocopia sage is a perennial native member of the sage family (Lamiaceae) that occurs only in Orocopia and Chocolate Mountains in the Colorado Desert of Riverside & Imperial Counties. During surveys of known populations of Orocopia sage, Davis found abundant and healthy populations at high elevation sites previously unknown to science. At lower elevations where these plants once flourished, the research team found unhealthy or dead populations. Melanie will discuss what's going on with these populations and what it means for a species in one of the most extreme climates in a rapidly changing environment.
