Over the last week, Riverside has experienced several fires that have deeply impacted members of our community. My heart is with the family grieving the loss of a loved one, as well as everyone who has lost their homes, property, and treasured belongings.

I want to express my sincere gratitude to the Riverside Fire Department, our mutual aid partners, and all first responders. We are grateful for their commitment to our community during these difficult moments.

If you would like to support UCR students affected, please consider donating to the Donation Drive on Wednesday, June 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at the UCR Bell Tower.

Riverside faced one of the largest fires in our city’s history as the Bain Fire threatened neighborhoods and forced evacuations across our community.

Thanks to the extraordinary work of our firefighters, critical air support, and coordinated emergency response efforts, countless homes were protected.

Thank you to every firefighter, first responder, city staff member, and partner agency who worked around the clock to keep Riverside safe and informed.

This National Public Works Week, we recognize the dedicated teams who keep Riverside running every day, and who’ve stepped up to support our emergency response to the Bain Fire. From maintaining critical infrastructure to paving new roads, Public Works is essential to the safety and quality of life of our community.

We’re also proud to celebrate new leadership in the department with Public Works Director Nathan Mustafa and Deputy Director Chris Scully. Together, their leadership will help continue building a stronger, safer, and more resilient Riverside.

There was so much to celebrate at last week’s Southern California Association of Governments (S**G) General Assembly! I’m honored to have been elected by my peers to serve as S**G’s 2nd Vice President—an opportunity to help bring critical resources to our region.

I’m also incredibly proud of our Public Works team for earning top honors for “Outstanding Achievement in Sustainability” for their Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) Mitigation Bank Pilot Program. This innovative program streamlines project approvals and ensures cost certainty while creating a dedicated funding source for citywide infrastructure improvements that enhance safety, reduce emissions, and expand multimodal access.
