We wanted to loop you into an amazing event coming to Los Angeles in May 2024: the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF). We are looking for Grand Award Judges for the over 1700 students selected as finalists and offered the opportunity to compete for approximately U.S. $9 million in awards and scholarships.

Students will travel to Los Angeles from over 65 different countries and territories to compete in the fair– this is the Olympics of science fair. We need STEM volunteers to judge at the Los Angeles Convention Center on May 14 and May 15, 2024. Parking, meals, training, and all supplies to serve as judges will be provided.

The scientific research conducted at ISEF is very impressive; take a look at the winners from this year. From a novel microneedle patch for type-2 diabetes control to discovering the smallest ever ultra-short-period planet using a novel phase folding detection system parallelized on a cheap GPU. These young researchers are doing some groundbreaking research. Many of these students either have patents or are patent-pending, and over 20 categories of disciplines are represented.

A Grand Award Judge must have one of the following qualifications:

• Have a minimum of six years of related professional experience beyond receiving their B.A., B.S., or Master’s degree, OR

• Have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent (D.O., Ed.D., D.D.S., D.V.M., etc.), OR

• Be a current graduate student with more than four years of doctoral-level research experience or who is within one year of doctoral dissertation defense.

By volunteering as a Grand Award Judge, you can play an essential role in encouraging the top students from around the world to become the future science and engineering leaders of tomorrow. If you are interested and available, please sign up below via the Judge Interest Form to be notified when the application opens.

All projects compete in one of 22 subject categories. You can also get a sense of the energy and excitement at the fair from this 3-minute video taken at the 2023 fair in Dallas.

You can find more information at, https://www.societyforscience.org/isef/grand-award/, but if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is the largest employer of STEM professionals in the federal government, with nearly 300,000 civilian scientists and engineers. The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students funded by the DoD.
In 2023, the SMART Program expanded the scholarship program eligibility by introducing the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship (Dellums SMART Scholarship). To honor the lifetime work of Representative Dellums, Congress established the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship, with the goal to increase participation of underrepresented students in the DoD STEM workforce. This opportunity expands the SMART scholarship opportunity to rising college freshmen who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in one of the 24 SMART STEM disciplines. High school seniors are eligible to apply for the Dellums SMART Scholarship.
Students seeking to attend a Historically Black College and University, Minority Institution, or Minority Serving Institution are particularly encouraged to apply. The Dellums SMART Scholarship is open to all applicants who meet the eligibility requirements.
The application is open annually from August 1 to December 1.
