The Village of River Forest is a mature community located approximately 10 miles west of downtown Chicago. The Village is home to 11,172 residents, an assortment of businesses and two universities: Concordia and Dominican. The Village is bounded on its west side by the Des Plaines River and large tracts of Cook County Forest Preserves. River Forest is bordered to the east by Oak Park, to the south

by Forest Park, to the north by Elmwood Park, and to the west, across the Des Plaines River, by Melrose Park and Maywood. The Village is centrally and conveniently located in the Chicago metropolitan area and it is well served by an efficient roadway network and mass transportation system.

Thank you to everyone who attended last weekend’s “Casual Conversation” event with Village President Cathy Adduci and Village staff. Questions from community members and topics of discussion ranged from e-bikes and scooter regulations to traffic safety concerns, storm cleanup efforts, and other matters affecting our community.

Join the Village and the River Forest Public Library for the annual Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will begin with a raising of the Juneteenth flag, a symbol of freedom and resilience, followed by a program focused on reflection, remembrance, and community. Attendees can also enjoy refreshments, shop women- and minority-owned vendors, and enjoy a performance by the Jackson Wolff Band. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend. Public Works is making strong progress at Heritage Square. Since breaking ground on June 3, crews have completed the initial phase of construction, including removal of the existing asphalt, site grading, installation of new concrete walkways and bench pads, and a new water service line to support a future drinking fountain.

Upcoming work will include placement of topsoil, installation of new landscaping, benches, and waste receptacles, as well as final site restoration. These improvements will continue to take shape over the coming weeks. Heritage Square is well on its way to becoming a more welcoming and vibrant community space. Recycling batteries in River Forest just got easier! The Sustainability Commission has expanded battery recycling at Village Hall (400 Park Avenue) through a partnership with The Battery Network, a State-approved program dedicated to responsible battery recycling.Residents can now recycle most household rechargeable and single-use batteries, including many batteries used in power tools and e-bikes, at the collection bins located in the basement of Village Hall.

Please note:
• Batteries must weigh 11 lbs. or less.
• Car batteries and other spillable lead-acid batteries are not accepted.
• Damaged, defective, or recalled lithium-ion batteries require special handling - please contact Village staff for assistance.

Public Works will be collecting storm debris from the roadway and parkway over the next few days. Residents are asked to place any branches or storm debris at the curb for pickup. To help expedite collection, please stack branches neatly at the curb with the trunk ends facing the street. Properly stacked branches allow crews to work more safely and efficiently, helping them move through the community more quickly.
