🚨Training Night
Tonight, members of the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department attended the first part of a two-part class on Elevator Emergencies, taught by instructors from the Bergen County Fire Academy.
This evening’s session covered a classroom lecture focusing on the basic components of elevators and the various types of emergencies firefighters may encounter.
Next month, our members will put this knowledge into practice during Part 2, a hands-on training session using local elevators right here in town.
Continuous training like this helps us stay prepared to serve our community safely and effectively!

⏰ Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries!
This weekend — Saturday night into Sunday — we “Fall Back” for Daylight Saving Time! The River Edge Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind everyone to set your clocks back one hour and take a moment to test and replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors if needed.
A quick check today could save a life tomorrow.

🎃Happy Halloween from the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department! 👻

We hope everyone has a fun and spooky night filled with treats (and no tricks)! As you head out to celebrate, here are a few safety tips to keep the night safe for all:

-Stay visible – Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes and carry a flashlight while trick-or-treating.-Be cautious with decorations – Keep candles and open flames away from anything flammable, and never leave them unattended.-If you’re driving around town – Please slow down and stay alert for children crossing the streets.
Have a safe and frightfully fun Halloween!

This morning, the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department responded on a Battalion 9 box to the 500 block of Kinderkamack Road in Oradell for reports of an odor of electrical burning inside a commercial structure.

Upon arrival, crews discovered several electrical outlets smoking due to water leaking into the electrical system. A dry line was stretched off Engine 24 as a precaution while the situation was investigated. Power to the building was secured, and notifications were made to the Fire Official and Building Department for follow-up.

Thanks to the quick actions of responding crews, the incident was contained without further damage or injury.

Fire Safety Month Update

This week, the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department had a blast visiting the pre-K students at That's My School! The kids learned the basics of fire safety, got to check out all the gear our firefighters wear on calls, and even toured our ladder truck and chief’s car!

A big thank-you to the amazing teachers for inviting us and for continuing to teach these important fire safety lessons throughout October during Fire Safety Month!

Last week, the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department conducted its monthly department drill, focusing on vehicle extrication operations. Our members trained on key skills such as vehicle stabilization, patient assessment prior to EMS arrival, and coordinated patient extrication with EMS personnel.

During the drill, crews used both our standard Holmatro hydraulic tools and our new portable battery-powered Holmatro tools, comparing the pros and cons of each during a simulated one-car motor vehicle accident (MVA) with a heavily trapped patient. This hands-on training helps ensure we’re always ready when seconds matter.

A big thank you to River Edge EMS for joining us and working side-by-side during this exercise — teamwork like this is what makes our community stronger!

In addition, our firefighters were out in the community this past week visiting Apple Tree Pre-School, Stepping Stones Pre-School, and New Beginnings Pre-School to share important fire safety tips with students for Fire Safety Month.

Thank you to all the teachers and students for welcoming us — we love helping our youngest residents learn how to stay safe.

In Memoriam: Richard Berry

It is with deep sadness that the River Edge Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of Active Member and Ex-Chief Richard Berry on October 6, 2025.

Ex-Chief Berry began his service with the REFD in June of 1968, dedicating over 57 years to the safety and well-being of our community. He held every firematic officer position, including Chief of Department in 1977, and served as President of Company 1 from 2014–2018.

In 2022, the Borough of River Edge proudly honored him as the Grand Marshal of the July 4th Parade.

Beyond our department, Chief Berry was one of few recognized as an Honorary Deputy Chief of the FDNY, served as an Special Agent with the FBI, River Edge OEM Coordinator, and shared his expertise teaching fire science degree students at Bergen Community College.

He will be deeply missed around the firehouse—not just for his leadership and experience, but for the stories he shared and the wisdom he passed down to generations of firefighters.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who had the honor of serving alongside him.
Rest in peace, Chief. Your legacy, laughter, and stories will live on.
