RGC Animal Control Officers recently responded to a snake call at the IDEA School parking lot. Upon arrival, officers met with school management who reported that a snake had entered the undercarriage of the rear portion of a staff vehicle. Officers safely captured the snake, which was identified as a Texas Indigo Snake, and relocated it to a more suitable habitat away from people and traffic.

The Texas Indigo Snake is a nonvenomous species native to South Texas and plays an important role in our ecosystem by helping control rodent populations. These snakes are generally not aggressive and prefer to avoid human contact.

As temperatures rise, snake activity increases, and it is common to see more snakes during their mating season. Residents can help reduce the likelihood of snakes around their homes by:

*Keeping grass and weeds trimmed.
*Removing brush piles, wood stacks, and other debris where snakes may hide.
*Controlling rodent populations, which are a food source for snakes.
*Sealing openings around homes, sheds, and garages.
*Keeping yards clean and free of clutter.

If you encounter a snake, do not attempt to handle it. Give it plenty of space and contact the appropriate authorities if assistance is needed.

We thank the school staff for their cooperation and are pleased that this situation was resolved safely for both the public and this important native species.

RGC Animal Control

Last night, RGC Animal Control officers responded to a call regarding a kitten that was believed to be trapped underneath a parked truck in the 400 block of Main Street.

Mrs. Diane Vasquez stated that while she was out walking her dog, Charlie, he alerted her to the sounds of a kitten crying from underneath the vehicle. Thanks to Charlie's keen senses and Mrs. Vasquez's quick action, our department was notified.

Upon arrival, officers, with the assistance of Mr. Lalo Vasquez, were able to safely rescue the kitten from underneath the truck. The kitten was not injured and is doing well at our kennels.

A special thank you to Charlie, Mrs. Diane Vasquez, and Mr. Lalo Vasquez for helping ensure this kitten was safely rescued.

If you believe this kitten belongs to you, please contact RGC Animal Control. If the kitten is not claimed within the required holding period, it will be available for adoption after three days.

RGC Animal Control would like to thank one of our local residents for taking advantage of the City’s Free Spay and Neuter Voucher Program and having her pet spayed.

Controlling pet overpopulation is a community effort, and while RGC Animal Control is committed to doing everything possible to address this issue, we cannot do it alone. Responsible pet ownership plays a vital role in reducing the number of unwanted litters and homeless animals in our community.

We are proud to partner with Texas Wellness Spay and Neuter Clinic to provide this important service to our residents. Through teamwork and community involvement, we can make a positive impact on animal welfare and help reduce pet overpopulation in Rio Grande City.

We will continue offering this program and plan to open registration for additional vouchers soon. Please follow our page for upcoming announcements and program details.

Together, we can make a difference for our pets and our community.
