Catoosa County Government Catoosa County is home to nearly 70,000 people in northwest Georgia and is a thriving suburban commu It was the backdrop for the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862.

Born from the Cherokee Indian nation, Catoosa County was created on December 5, 1853 with land taken from neighboring Walker and Whitfield counties. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "catoosa," meaning "between two hills." Ringgold was designated as the county seat one year after the county was created. It was named for Major Samuel Ringgold who died of wounds received in the Mexican War,

Battle of Palo Alto in 1846. The Ringgold Depot was significant in transporting Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and is one of the few remaining antebellum railroad depots in the state. From here General Sherman led his troops through Ringgold Gap to begin his campaign against Atlanta and the heart of the South. Built at the turn of the century, Fort Oglethorpe was home to the 6th Cavalry and was considered to be the best Cavalry post in the United States. In 1946 the military installation was sold by the government to a local group of civilians as a ready made town. Today, the original Cavalry post buildings on Barnhardt Circle are used as private homes. Located in Fort Oglethorpe, the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park is the oldest and largest park of its kind. Eight historic areas constitute approximately 8,000 acres of Civil War battlegrounds. The year 1863 found Union and Confederate troops clashing near Chickamauga Creek in what proved to be, for the number of men involved, the bloodiest battle in American history. It serves as a reminder of our eventful past.

Severe Weather Update: Catoosa County Emergency Management, Public Works, and Catoosa County Sheriff's Office are handling trees and limbs down along roadways in a few scattered locations:
- 1200 block of Mt. Pisgah Road
- Swanson Road at Front Street
- 300 block of School Street
- 3700 block of Dogwood Valley Road
- Colbert Hollow Road at Colbert Lane
- 2000 block of Mag Williams Road
Public Works crews are working to clear these areas as quickly as possible.
In a few of these locations power lines were taken down, and North Georgia Electric Membership Corporation crews are working to restore service.
As of 7:30 pm it appears the storms have passed well to our east. Please stay weather aware this evening as some storms remain in northern Alabama and are moving eastward.

Congratulations "Lemon Heads", a.k.a. future firefighters! The 2026 Fire Explorer Camp at the Catoosa County Fire Department training center is underway, with high school students completing rigorous training in fire suppression and rescues.
Our own Catoosa County Fire Department Explorer Post 2305 is hosting students from Hamilton County.

8:00 PM UPDATE: Preliminary Runoff Election results for Ringgold City Council are in:

- Randall Franks, 60.22% (215votes)
- Caleb Parker, 39.78% (142 votes)

The total of 357 votes includes Election Day, early, and mail ballots.
There are a small number of registered voters within the City of Ringgold who vote at the Poplar Springs and Boynton precincts but those results are pending as of 8:00 pm.
We will post the final results as they are tabulated.
