Catoosa County Government Catoosa County is home to nearly 70,000 people in northwest Georgia and is a thriving suburban commu It was the backdrop for the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862.

Born from the Cherokee Indian nation, Catoosa County was created on December 5, 1853 with land taken from neighboring Walker and Whitfield counties. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "catoosa," meaning "between two hills." Ringgold was designated as the county seat one year after the county was created. It was named for Major Samuel Ringgold who died of wounds received in the Mexican War,

Battle of Palo Alto in 1846. The Ringgold Depot was significant in transporting Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and is one of the few remaining antebellum railroad depots in the state. From here General Sherman led his troops through Ringgold Gap to begin his campaign against Atlanta and the heart of the South. Built at the turn of the century, Fort Oglethorpe was home to the 6th Cavalry and was considered to be the best Cavalry post in the United States. In 1946 the military installation was sold by the government to a local group of civilians as a ready made town. Today, the original Cavalry post buildings on Barnhardt Circle are used as private homes. Located in Fort Oglethorpe, the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park is the oldest and largest park of its kind. Eight historic areas constitute approximately 8,000 acres of Civil War battlegrounds. The year 1863 found Union and Confederate troops clashing near Chickamauga Creek in what proved to be, for the number of men involved, the bloodiest battle in American history. It serves as a reminder of our eventful past.

Early voting begins next Monday for the Primary Runoff Election.
Ringgold voters will choose a City Councilperson, while all Catoosa County voters can choose their party's candidate for US Senate, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Secretary of State, Commissioners of Insurance and Labor, State School Superintendent, and Public Service Commissioner. Party winners face off in the November General Election.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: CSX Railroad gangs (crews) will be replacing worn track parts at train crossings in Catoosa County this week - June 1 - weather permitting. We have not received any firm dates or times. The scheduled work includes crossings at Bandy Road, Dogwood Valley Road, and three unidentified private roads.
We do not have any further information, but if your daily drive takes you across the tracks south of Ringgold please be prepared this week.

We have ten FREE tickets to give away for the red carpet premier of "Set Free" at The Colonnade, a locally produced faith based film by Brandon Cannon.
The June 5 showing is almost sold out - the FREE tickets are for the Saturday, June 6 showing at 5:30 pm.
Tickets are available for sale for Friday, June 5 (just a few left) and the 2:00 pm and 5:30 pm showings on June 6.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: I-75 southbound is shut down at the 348 exit in Ringgold as first responders and LifeForce Air Medical are on the scene of a crash. We are also getting reports that Highway 41 in Ringgold at the railroad overpass is closed due to a tractor trailer stuck underneath.
