Catoosa County Government Catoosa County is home to nearly 70,000 people in northwest Georgia and is a thriving suburban commu It was the backdrop for the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862.

Born from the Cherokee Indian nation, Catoosa County was created on December 5, 1853 with land taken from neighboring Walker and Whitfield counties. The name is derived from the Cherokee word "catoosa," meaning "between two hills." Ringgold was designated as the county seat one year after the county was created. It was named for Major Samuel Ringgold who died of wounds received in the Mexican War,

Battle of Palo Alto in 1846. The Ringgold Depot was significant in transporting Confederate soldiers during the Civil War and is one of the few remaining antebellum railroad depots in the state. From here General Sherman led his troops through Ringgold Gap to begin his campaign against Atlanta and the heart of the South. Built at the turn of the century, Fort Oglethorpe was home to the 6th Cavalry and was considered to be the best Cavalry post in the United States. In 1946 the military installation was sold by the government to a local group of civilians as a ready made town. Today, the original Cavalry post buildings on Barnhardt Circle are used as private homes. Located in Fort Oglethorpe, the Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park is the oldest and largest park of its kind. Eight historic areas constitute approximately 8,000 acres of Civil War battlegrounds. The year 1863 found Union and Confederate troops clashing near Chickamauga Creek in what proved to be, for the number of men involved, the bloodiest battle in American history. It serves as a reminder of our eventful past.

A grain truck driver is injured after his vehicle crashed and rolled over off of the southbound side of Alabama Highway...

A grain truck driver is injured after his vehicle crashed and rolled over off of the southbound side of Alabama Highway at Yates Springs Road.
Calls to Catoosa County E-911 just after 2:00 pm reported the rollover crash with fire, and Catoosa County Fire Department firefighters from stations 2,6,1, and command staff responded to the scene.
The driver received non life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital by Puckett EMS.
The crash is under investigation.

September is Literacy Month in Catoosa County! Our Board of Commissioners applauds the work of Catoosa Citizens for Literacy and the Learning Center for providing free assistance for anyone wishing to earn their GED - including free child care and transportation.
This life changing opportunity is made possible through a collaboration with GNTC and Catoosa Citizens for Literacy.
If you or someone you know wants to complete their high school level education by earning a GED, please call the Learning Center at (706) 965-8275 or (706) 965-6155. The Learning Center is next to the Catoosa County Library at 36 Muscogee Trail in Ringgold.

Kudos to our Public Works crews for completing emergency stormwater repairs this week along Boynton Drive after last Friday's flood!
The job included replacing drain tile and driveway entrances to four homes along the right of way, and enhancing drainage ditches.
Everyday they put in the hard work in the heat, cold, rain, snow, and storms to keep Catoosa County moving.
We appreciate you guys, and we can't thank you enough!
