Sewickley Township Volunteer Firefighters Answer Widespread Storm Emergencies
On the evening of September 3, 2026, at approximately 6:40 p.m., Station 14 (Rillton Volunteer Fire Company) and Station 85 (Hutchinson Volunteer Fire Company) of the Sewickley Township Volunteer Fire Company were dispatched to a report of a tree down on Mars Hill Road in the vicinity of Green Hills Road.
After clearing that initial assignment, crews were immediately redirected as a severe weather system moved through Westmoreland County. Multiple additional calls followed in rapid succession throughout the Sewickley Township service area and into neighboring North Huntingdon Township, where Sewickley Township volunteers provided mutual aid to Station 6, Fairmont-Hahntown Volunteer Fire Department.
Incidents included downed trees, downed utility wires, flooded roadways, flooded basements, and a reported possible structure fire at the Walmart in North Huntingdon. Conditions remained hazardous well beyond the initial storm passage, with blocked roads, compromised power lines, and standing water creating ongoing risks to residents and motorists.
Sewickley Township’s volunteer firefighters remained on duty around the clock for approximately 72 hours, handling an estimated 30 to 40 service calls. Final incident totals are still being compiled.
These men and women left work, family, and rest to protect their neighbors under difficult and prolonged conditions. Their response reflects the commitment that volunteer fire companies across the County provide every day.
